Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 436 AM PDT Wed Aug 6 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Smoke from wildfires in southern California will continue to impact the area at least through Thursday morning. * Hotter than normal temperatures and dry conditions will continue into the weekend. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for portions of southeast California and northwest Arizona today and Thursday. * Critical fire weather conditions are expected across Lincoln County today and Thursday. && .DISCUSSION...through Tuesday. Early morning satellite loop showed scattered cirrus over our region. Surface obs showed light winds and temperatures slightly warmer than 24 hours ago, which segues into the first concern of the day, which is heat. Temperatures, and thus HeatRisk, will continue to creep upward today and Thursday. See no reason to change the Extreme Heat Warning which is in effect for southern San Bernardino County, southern Mohave County, and the Lake Mead NRA. The next concern will be fire, in two ways. First, ongoing fires in southern California will continue to send smoke our way in the southwesterly flow aloft. As high pressure over New Mexico flexes west today, the trajectory may change just enough to push smoke northwest of Las Vegas this afternoon, but that could be short lived if the fires eject new plumes this afternoon which would be pushed our way. Second, very dry and breezy conditions in Lincoln County will cause dangerous conditions for rapid fire spread. The Red Flag Warning for today looks good, and also upgraded Thursday's Watch to a Warning as conditions will not improve. Beginning Friday, temperatures will drift down slightly, but remain above normal for early August. Winds should gradually settle down as low pressure along the Canadian border finally exits to the east and high pressure takes over. As suspected yesterday, the NBM has backed away from expanding thunderstorm chances westward, and now has them essentially limited to Mohave County through the period. && .FIRE WEATHER...Red Flag Warnings are in effect for NV Fire Weather Zone 461 today and again Thursday for low humidity and gusty winds. South to southwest winds with gusts up to 30 to 35 mph combined with single digit relative humidity in the afternoon will result in critical fire weather conditions. Any fires that develop will have the potential to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning and recreation with sparks is not recommended. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light southerly winds early this morning will turn more to the southwest and increase to above 10 knots after 16Z. Occasional gusts to 25 knots can be expected through the afternoon before ending around sunset. Light winds return overnight into Thursday morning. Smoke from wildfires burning in southern California will continue to advect into the area today. The latest guidance indicates that this smoke should remain elevated across the valley, generally between 7kft AGL and 10kft AGL. Based on expected fire conditions today, the best estimated timing for potential impacts will be between 00Z and 09Z, but this will be highly dependent on actual fire activity. More significant impacts are possible along the Daggett corridor, where slantwise visibilities will be reduced. Away from the smoke, FEW to SCT clouds with bases AOA 20kft AGL are likely through the TAF period. Temperatures today will exceed 100F between 19Z and 04Z, with a peak around 108F around 00Z. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light winds at regional TAF sites early this morning will increase this afternoon, with most areas seeing gusts of 20 to 25 knots developing by late morning. The usual exception to this will be across the western Mojave Desert, where gusts to 30 knots are possible from mid-afternoon through late evening. Other areas will see the gusts decrease around sunset. Smoke from wildfires burning in southern California will continue to advect into the western Mojave Desert and southern Nevada today. Most of the smoke is expected to remain elevated, generally between 6kft AGL and 10kft AGL. However, temporary reductions in surface visibility will be possible, especially in and around KDAG late this afternoon and evening. Reductions in slantwise visibility can also be expected, with the most significant impacts expected along the Daggett-to-Las Vegas corridor.
