Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Glasgow MT 425 AM MDT Sun Jun 8 2025 .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGES: - Daytime gusty winds in excess of 40 mph will persist through this evening. - Red Flag Warning for elevated fire weather conditions exists today for all NE MT fire weather zones from 10 AM to 10 PM. - Haze and smoke from Canada will return to northeast Montana on Monday. - A weather pattern change next week will result in more favorable conditions for organized thunderstorms, beginning on Tuesday evening. WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: Upper low over the upper Midwest will continue moving east, with a flat upper ridge sliding into the west over the next few days. At the low levels, high pressure will be building into central Montana. Strong winds are expected to develop again today with the tight pressure gradient and strong jet aloft. Flow has shifted direction enough to push the smoke into North Dakota for day, but is expected to return briefly on Monday before westerly flow kicks in. With warmer temperatures and more sunshine today, relative humidity will be slightly lower than yesterday. Combined with strong, gusty winds, fire weather conditions remain elevated, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for today. By Monday, the tight pressure gradient weakens high pressure moves into the northern plains and a strong upper- level ridge of high pressure expands over the western states. This will provide hot and dry conditions from Monday through Tuesday, but surface winds will be generally light, thus not posing as much of a fire weather threat. Tuesday evening and beyond, region-wide conditions set up for organized summertime thunderstorms, with higher humidity from the south/southeast and troughing/SW flow moving in from the PAC NW. Models are hinting at strong thunderstorms from our SW on Wednesday evening. FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: Confidence is high for elevated fire weather conditions again today. Confidence is increasing for organized thunderstorm activity beginning around the middle of next week. Used a blend of hi-res short term consensus models for wind and pops now through Day 2. All other grids used the NBM. && .AVIATION... VFR. Smoke has cleared much of the region overnight, and is not expected to return today. This will lead to generally clear skies today and tonight.
