Issued at 212 AM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025 Low pressure swings across the northwest U.S. and southern Canada. Today will be dry except for a few late afternoon and evening "showers" well to our north. Winds do pick up this afternoon, with gusts of 20-30 mph common. We could see some gusts north of the Arco Desert and INL to the Montana border pushing 35 mph briefly. As that low begins to drop southeast into our area, showers and thunderstorms increase north of a Galena Summit to Palisades line later tomorrow. Highest chances will across Lemhi County and the eastern highlands. We aren't expecting a ton of rain, but not a lot of stronger winds either. Higher resolution models aren't showing much of a signal at all for gusts over 35 mph. Outside of storms, we do expect it to be breezy...with gusts of 25-35 mph likely over most of central and eastern Idaho. Temperatures today pop back into the low and mid 90s at lower elevations, but quickly drop 5-10 degrees on Wednesday. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Issued at 212 AM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025 It looks like some lingering showers and storms are forecast mainly across the eastern highlands earlier on Friday. It will be breezy in spots Friday but not as gusty vs Thursday. It looks dry heading into the early part of next week. Temperatures won't be quick to warm back up as we remain in northerly flow through the weekend. We are still expecting plenty of 70-degree highs Friday and Saturday, with very few spots potentially top out above 80! && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1121 AM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025 VFR conditions are expected today with light winds this morning becoming a bit more breezy this afternoon with gusts around 20 kts at all sites except for BYI where winds will remain on the lighter side. Any isolated thunderstorms in the mountains today are expected to remain outside of our TAF sites. Winds will diminish overnight, but pick up again on Thursday afternoon as a cold front approaches. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 212 AM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025 Moderate flow aloft from the southwest will be able to mix down enough to generate gusty wind today at the surface. This will couple with a very dry air mass over the region to produce Red Flag conditions in the Caribou NF forecast zone 413 and a solid portion of the northern Sawtooth NF. Gusts do not get strong enough today in zone 410, but it should be windier on Thu as the actual dry cold front sweeps through during the afternoon to early evening. However, the front will have increasing humidity as it approaches. This appears to leave forecast zone 413 again the zone at risk, the last place to see the results of the increased humidity. The cold front passage on Thu will also generate thunderstorm activity in the ID-MT border region, however, it will be mainly isolated in coverage, with nothing expected south of a Stanley- Chilly line in the Salmon-Challis NF area and a Spencer-Macks Inn line in the Eastern Idaho Dispatch area. No more thunderstorms are expected for the rest of the seven day period. The cold front's after-effects will be a strong cooling, by as much as 10 to 15 deg F from Today compared to Fri. Fri and Sat should be the below normal coldest temperatures for the upcoming week. Starting Sun, warming will return, bringing temperatures above seasonal normals by Mon or Tue.
