Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 423 PM MST Tue Jan 7 2025 .SYNOPSIS...A storm system will bring colder air, gusty northeast winds and limited chances for snow showers through Wednesday. Drier and cold weather continues for Thursday, with gusty northeast winds. Winds decrease with a slight warming trend in store for the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...A cold low pressure system was located along the southern border of Arizona during the afternoon, heading southward. Associated with the low a cold front was pushing from north to south across the area with temperatures taking a noticeable dip at many locations compared to Monday. Behind the front most locations were picking up gusty northeast to east winds, locally gusting to 30 mph. The current system has good dynamics for upward motion but is lacking moisture. What we're expecting to see through midday Wednesday is cold air and the east to northeast flow spreading across all of Arizona and producing areas of orographic lift, especially over the highest terrain features and northeast/east facing slopes. The result will be limited low level saturation (due to the upslope flow) in combination with the periodic passage of mid-level precipitating cloud bands rotation around the low aloft to produce periods of snow showers. Looking at generally less than an inch of accumulation from this activity but locations such as the San Francisco Peaks, Kaibab Plateau and White Mountains could see 2 to 5 inches of accumulation. Winds subside Wednesday afternoon and evening as this first low heads further south and east. On Thursday...A cold and drier system dives across the area from the north. Look for chilly daytime temperatures to continue with gusty north to northeast winds returning. The gusty winds will be located area wide during the day Thursday but then become focused from the Mogollon Rim southward Thursday night. Many locations will see gusts in excess of 35 mph with the pattern setting up such that the San Francisco Peaks could see gusts in excess of 60 mph Thursday night into Friday. From Friday onward...A dry northwesterly to northerly flow aloft will take over. Temperatures will warm to near normal on Saturday before yet another dry disturbance drops in from the north to deliver colder temperature on Sunday and for the start of next week. Locally breezy northwest to northeast winds will continue. && .AVIATION...Wednesday 08/00Z through Thursday 09/00Z...VFR conditions will mainly prevail outside of brief MVFR ceilings/visibilities from -SHSN/SHRA. Greatest chances for precipitation will be north and east of a KGCN-KSEZ-KPAN line between 00Z-18Z. Gusty NE winds anticipated south and west of the same line throughout the TAF period. Lighter winds return around 00Z Thursday. OUTLOOK...Thursday 09/00Z through Saturday 11/00Z...N-NE winds 15-25 kts, gusting 30-40 kts, forecast between 16Z Thursday and 06Z Friday. Afterwards, W-NW winds 5-15 kts expected. VFR conditions anticipated through the period. && .FIRE WEATHER...Wednesday and Thursday...Some lingering snow showers will stay around on Wednesday along the Rim and White Mountains before moving away completely by Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Dry conditions expected with no precipitation Thursday. Expect NE winds 15-25 mph, gusting to 30-35 mph all day Wednesday, lightning up to NE 10-15 mph overnight into Thursday morning before picking up again to N-NE 15-25 mph, gusting to 35 mph around midday Thursday. Winds will remain elevated overnight until about midday Friday. Friday through Sunday...Dry conditions with no precipitation expected. Temperatures will warm back close to average during the weekend. Winds shift to the NW at 10 mph on Friday afternoon, becoming light and terrain driven Friday night into Saturday morning.
