Heavy Snow and Damaging Wind in Nevada, March 11 to 13, 2024

.SYNOPSIS...An active weather pattern continues later tonight,
bringing periods of rain, snow and gusty winds to much of northern
and central NV through Wednesday. By Thursday, and on through the
weekend the region will be dry with temperatures trending warmer.

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night. Light returns on
radar are moving across mainly northern Nevada this afternoon.
These features are most likely light showers or virga. There is a
weak wave moving out of the area. For tonight, the next weather
system will be moving across the Pacific Northwest tonight,
bringing rain and snow showers across northwestern Nevada.
Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s.

The storm system will continue to influence the weather for
Tuesday and Tuesday night across northern and central Nevada.
Winter weather advisories remain valid for northern Elko county
and the Ruby Mountains/East Humboldt range. Snow levels will be
around 5500 to 6000 feet in northern Nevada to above 6500 feet in
central Nevada for the day on Tuesday. Highs on Tuesday will be in
the 40s and 50s. Winds will be breezy out of the west with gusts
to 40 mph. Snow levels will begin to lower during the overnight on
Tuesday with levels at the valley floors. Winds will remain
breezy with lows in the 20s and 30s. Total snow amounts will be
about one to four inches in northern Elko county and five to ten
inches in the Rubies. Locally higher amounts are possible. For
other valley locations, up to a half inch is expected in northern
Nevada with less than an inch in central Nevada.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday

Lingering snow showers expected early Wednesday across northeast
NV as a cold, upper-level low moves into UT. Showers will diminish
Wednesday night as the low tracks southward into AZ by Thursday.
Meanwhile, a tightening pressure gradient between the low to our
south and high pressure to our north will increase north winds of
25-35 mph and gusts to 45-55 mph. The strongest winds are expected
to be in the north wind prone areas, including Nye and parts of
Elko Counties. By Thursday, a Rex block develops across the
Pacific NW, allowing dry conditions and warmer temperatures
heading into the weekend. Winds will be light below 10 mph for
the weekend and early next week. High temperatures will start out
in the upper 30s and lower 40s Wednesday to the lower to mid 60s
by Sunday. Lows will rise from the teens and 20s to the lower 30s
by next Monday morning.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions expected this afternoon with CIGS
remaining above 5KFT. Sustained SW winds of 10-15 knots with
gusts to 20-25 knots at KWMC and KBAM will continue at least
through this evening. Increase in cloud cover with lowering CIGS
and reduced VIS tonight as the next round of precipitation moves
in from the west/northwest. Showers begin at KWMC around 05Z to
09Z, spreading east/southeast to remaining terminals through the
day Tuesday. W-NW winds will increase to 10-15 knots with gusts to
20-25 knots at northern terminals Tuesday morning and afternoon.
