Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 210 AM PST Sun Dec 29 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Wet weather and gusty winds are in store for the Silver State as the weekend comes to an end. Yet another weather system will bring precipitation mainly to the northern half of the state while strong gusty winds have prompted a Wind Advisory for Humboldt, Lander, and Eureka counties on Sunday. Precautions should be taken while driving Sunday to give room to semis and high profile vehicles. Temperatures drop behind the system on Monday as the year comes to a close on a cold, but drier note. && .SHORT TERM...Sunday through Tuesday morning The two main features that will impact the short term period are the shortwave set to bring more precipitation to the area Sunday PM and a strong jet core that will influence gusty winds during the day Sunday. Broad ridging over the SW CONUS is in place through the rest of the weekend and a zonal 135-140KT jet core in the axis of the ridge will migrate southward during the day Sunday. High wind speeds will mix down far enough to enhance surface winds prompting a Wind Advisory for Humboldt, Lander, and Eureka counties until Sunday evening. Wind speeds in the range of 25-30 mph range are possible for western and central portions of the state with gusts of 45-50 mph out of the west-southwest. Also traversing the zonal flow of the ridge axis will be yet another shortwave. Moisture across the state clears out early Sunday morning but by mid-morning a rapid increase in moisture (0.25 PW increases to 0.5-0.6 on a sharp SE-NW gradient) as the system begins to push into the area. Assisted by upper level dynamics in response to the entrance region of the aforementioned jet and a fair amount of frontogenesis draped over northern NV, precip will initiate again over the western half of the state later Sunday morning and spread to the east across central and northern NV during the afternoon. Measurable precipitation will be mainly north of US-50 and, during daylight hours, be mostly rain as afternoon highs on Sunday will be similar to Saturdays highs in the 40s and low 50s. As the sun sets and the associated cold front begins its march across the area snow levels around 7500 feet will fall to valley floors and a brief changeover to snow fall will occur Sunday evening. Precipitation will slowly wane from west to east overnight with lingering showers over Elko county into Sunday morning. Valleys will see a dusting of snow with this quick moving system while higher elevations will see several inches on top of what has already fallen this week. Monday will be a much colder day for the region as highs behind the frontal boundary will struggle into the 30s by Monday afternoon and appreciable moisture clears to the east. Monday into Tuesday will be a cold but quiet period as Nevada gets set to say goodbye to 2024 and welcome in the new year. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday Cool temperatures on Tuesday in the wake of an exiting trough leaving temperatures a few degrees below normal for this time of year. Zonal flow takes the trough’s place and a few embedded disturbances in it will trigger some low chances for precipitation along the Oregon/Idaho border Wednesday through Friday, although any accumulation will be minimal (<0.05 inches). A warming trend is also expected during this time, with daytime high temperatures peaking around ten degrees above normal on Friday. The next trough and associated stronger precipitation chances looks to begin its passage across Northern and Central Nevada late Friday. The best precipitation chances with this system currently look to be Friday evening into early Saturday morning, but it’s still too early to say much for sure. Showers look to clear out by Sunday, for a dry and slightly warmer than normal day. && .AVIATION...Dry with VFR conditions at all terminals early this morning. A cold front and strong winds aloft pass over the region today which will produce S-SW winds of 15-25kts gusting 25-35kts. Rain showers will reach KWMC KBAM and KEKO this afternoon with CIGs mainly VFR, although periods of MVFR are possible in any moderate rain showers. Cooler conditions post-frontal with MVFR conditions expected at KEKO from 02Z to 06Z in light snow with VIS down to 5SM. Drier conditions across central NV today, with only a 10% chance of precipitation at KELY. Winds diminish this evening, with showers ending by 08Z. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
