Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 119 PM PST Sat Dec 14 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Active pattern continues as an upper level trough and attendant cold front move across Nevada tonight through Sunday, with another trough approaching the area for Tuesday. A break in the action is timed for later this week as a warming trend starts Thursday with high pressure building across the southwestern United States through next weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night. Skies are cloudy across northern and central Nevada at this time. Echos on radar are also increasing as moisture spills over the Sierra-Nevada mountains. Winds have picked up in central Nevada with gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph. Temperatures are generally in the 40s over the area. For tonight, look for the showers to increase in coverage. A cold front will be pushing across the forecast area from west to east, exiting the are tomorrow morning. With the frontal passage, any remaining rain showers will changeover to snow showers. Accumulations in the valley locations will generally be an inch or less, though the best chances for seeing accumulations will be in northern Elko county where one to two inches are possible. Along the roadways, an inch or two on the higher passes and summits of I-80 and US Highway 93 and SR-225 are likely. Overnight lows will be in the 20s. By Sunday and Sunday night, northwest flow will help to keep a lid on afternoon temperatures with readings in the 30s, with low to mid 40s in central Nevada. Any remaining precipitation will diminish in areal coverage and a weak ridge axis will quickly move over and east of the forecast area. Not much in the way of activity is expected tomorrow with skies remaining partly cloudy. Clouds will be on the increase during the overnight in advance of the next system approaching from the west. Lows will be in the teens and 20s. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday Ensemble guidance remains in good agreement for a trough of low pressure to move across the forecast area Monday into early Tuesday. The attendant cold front will push southeastward across northern Elko and Humboldt Counties on Monday, and then across northern Nye and White Pine Counties Tuesday morning. Most of the wintry mix precipitation and higher elevation snow will fall Monday night, primarily north of I-80. Snow levels will fluctuate between the valley floor and 5,500 feet from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. Here are the probabilities for a trace or more of snow at select locations in northern Nevada. On Tuesday, the aforementioned trough will move east across northern Utah while a ridge of a high pressure strengthens over the western U.S.. A gradual warming trend is expected by midweek, with highs reaching the upper 40s to lower 50s with overnight lows ranging from the teens to 20s. Skies will be partly to mostly clear, and winds will remain light, staying below 10 mph throughout the period. Uncertainty arises as cluster analysis indicates a Pacific Northwest trough advancing eastward, bringing light rain and mountain snow showers primarily to northern Nevada starting Saturday. && .AVIATION...A mix of rain and snow showers is expected today as the next weather system and cold front moves through the region. Expanding shower coverage and lowering snow levels will lead to intermittent reductions in ceilings below 3000 feet and visibility between 3-5 SM at northern terminal sites. Winds will increase out of the south-southwest at 10-15 kts, with gusts of 20-25 kts. VFR conditions will persist for KELY and KTPH with ceilings ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet across the southern part of the state. Winds will increase out of the south-southwest at 15-20 kts, with gusts of 25-40 kts.
