Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 237 AM PDT Fri Aug 23 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Another day will be had as winds increase across northern and central Nevada. This will bring gusts of 30 to 50 mph depending on location as well as cooling temperatures today. Increasing chances for light precipitation will develop across the north this afternoon, spreading east and south during the overnight and into the weekend. The threat for showers will diminish through the latter portions of the weekend, with dry and warming weather by the beginning of next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night. Skies are clear across much of northern and central Nevada, per the latest satellite loop. The only clouds are located in Humboldt county at this time and this is due to an upper level low pressure system that is just west of Oregon. For today, look for mostly sunny skies over the area, though clouds will be in the increase as the aforementioned upper low moves inland and east. Winds out ahead of this system will also develop with strong winds over portions of White Pine and southeast Elko counties where a wind advisory is in effect through this evening. Blowing dust will be kicked up due to these winds and will spread northeast. Light, isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible in portions of Humboldt county today though amounts will be light. Highs will be cooler with readings in the 70s to low 80s in the afternoon. For tonight, the upper low will continue its trek inland. This will allow for the formation of isolated to scattered light showers over portions of northern Nevada during the overnight. Winds will diminish, though will remain breezy especially over southern White Pine county. Lows will be in the 40s. For Saturday and Saturday night, the upper low is expected to transit the northern portions of Nevada. This will lead to isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly north of the US Highway 50 corridor. Afternoon high temperatures will cool significantly and will remain below normal for this time of year with readings in the 60s and low 70s. Winds will continue to remain strong in southern and eastern White Pine county where winds will be gusting to 35 mph. Many other locations will see winds less than 15 mph. Overnight lows will be in the 30s. Some locales could see temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s and frost/freeze products may be needed. Some of the colder locales like Wildhorse, along with towns across the US Highway 50 corridor, could see these colder temperatures. .LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday Robust upper trof resides over Nevada Sunday morning while continuing to progress east thru the intermountain west. Light rain will exit the area to the east Sunday morning but a much cooler air mass situated over northern and central Nevada looks to produce light instability type rain showers along with a stray thunderstorm or two in and near Elko County Sunday afternoon. Valley rain totals for the entire event will be modest with the latest progs advertising around 0.10” or less for most. Winds will be cool northwesterly and generally light to breezy Sunday across the forecast area. Temperatures begin a gradual warming trend Sunday but not before frost is observed across many valleys across the forecast area with early morning temperatures residing in the 30s, mid to upper 20s for the typical cold spots. Otherwise, daytime highs in the mid 60s to mid 70s can be expected Sunday with overnight lows in the low 30s to low 40s. The typical cold spots can expect frost again Sunday night and early Monday morning. Proper precautions should be taken to protect sensitive plants and gardens. Warming trend and dry weather expected Monday and continuing into mid week as the trof progresses east and westerly flow influences the Great Basin. Winds will be generally light. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail at all Northern and Central Nevada terminals through at least the next 24 hours. South to southwest wind gusts near 25 knots are expected at KEKO, KWMC, KTPH, and KBAM Friday afternoon into Friday evening. South wind gusts near 40 knots are anticipated at KELY Friday afternoon into Friday evening. Blowing dust may result in MVFR visibilities at KELY Friday afternoon into Friday evening. At this time, there is not enough forecast confidence to include MVFR visibilities in the KELY terminal forecast Friday afternoon into Friday evening. && .FIRE WEATHER...Look for another day of breezy to windy conditions developing today. Wind gusts will be stronger across portions of east-central Nevada where gusts to 50 mph are possible. Skies will remain mostly sunny with relative humidity values dropping to the single digits in spots. A red flag warning will continue for the central and eastern parts of the forecast area. Isolated showers and even a thunderstorm will be possible across Humboldt county later this afternoon and evening. For Saturday, a storm system moving inland over the west will bring increasing chances for light precipitation and cooler temperatures. Winds will be much less though still breezy in White Pine county. However, look for minimum relative humidity values rising into the teens or higher with temperatures cooling off in the 60s and 70s. Look for continued chances for isolated to scattered showers on Sunday, followed by drier and gradually warming weather next week. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
