What happened

The episode as NWS SGF wrote it up.

Severe thunderstorms brought damaging wind, large hail, and five tornadoes to the Missouri Ozarks from the evening of April 1st to the early morning hours of April 2nd. A tornado that occurred near Fair Grove was rated in EF-1. The four other tornadoes were rated EF-0 with three of them occurring from eastern Dallas County into Laclede County. The fourth EF-0 tornado occurred in St. James.

In addition to the tornadoes, storm surveys revealed several different swaths of damaging straight line wind speeds of 70-100 mph. Wind speeds of 90-100 mph caused roof damage to businesses in downtown Carthage with power poles and trees also snapped. Other swaths of significant wind damage occurred near Halltown, Elkland, and along the I-44 corridor from Waynesville to Rolla.

Several thunderstorms also produced hail from the size of quarters to tennis balls. Hail ranging from one to two inches in diameter occurred in an around Bolivar. Tennis ball size hail fell in the town of Maple Grove.

Changes since last discussion:

1. Expecting less in the way of notable precip during the
morning and early afternoon thanks to greater confidence in the
presence of a strong EML as shown by the 00Z SGF sounding and
model profiles. This leads to greater instability around
expected storm initiation time late this afternoon and early
early evening, resulting in potential for very large to giant
hail in the SPC hatched hail area. 00Z/01 HREF shows 70-90% of
membership with >1,500 J/kg of SBCAPE, and 40-60% with >2,000
J/kg in the hatched hail area. The very large to giant hail
threat is very conditional on storm type and coverage (discrete
supercells vs. more closely packed clusters) early in the event
and how quickly storm mode transitions to linear segments. As
communicated in previous discussions, instability decreases
with time and eastward extent, but still will be supportive of
severe weather throughout the CWA.

2. The conditional threat for tornadoes, including strong
tornadoes has increased over the hatched tornado area, which
could potentially be more focused to areas northwest of a line
from Joplin, MO to Warsaw, MO. The aforementioned increase in
confidence of having ample instability and in seeing supercells,
along with greater potential for backed low level winds and
supportive hodographs, are what led to the increased risk. This
threat (especially the strong tornado threat) is very
conditional on storm mode and coverage. If storms develop into
closely packed clusters or transition more quickly to linear,
expect this threat to be lower. Also, it's worth noting that the
threat for stronger tornadoes is primarily in the late
afternoon to mid evening time range.

What remains the same from the last discussion:

1. Wind gusts to 70 mph (can't rule out isolated higher gusts in
the strongest storms) are possible in severe storms across the
CWA. Given very strong wind fields, there is potential to see
a lot of damaging wind reports across the area. In fact, 00Z/01
HREF data show 60-90% neighborhood (25 mile radius)
probabilities of >50 mph thunderstorm wind gusts across most of
the CWA.

2. Still expecting any discrete storms that form to grow
upscale with time and with eastward travel through the CWA,
leading to a decreased hail threat and more widespread damaging
wind threat, along with increasing potential for QLCS tornadoes
in bowing segments given 0-3km shear of 40-50 kts. Uncertainty
remains in how quickly and where the storm mode changes to
linear, but the general expectation is to see mainly a linear
mode along and east of Highway 65.

3. Flooding threat remains. As noted previously, this is a
localized threat if things line up just right. With strong wind
fields, storms will be moving quickly which will limit residence
time for flash flooding.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Cold air will push through the area Tuesday, with temperatures
falling nearly continuously from Monday night into Tuesday
night. Noon temperatures Tuesday are expected to range from 50
over the NW to around 70 over the SE, falling into the 40s and
50s at all locations by the evening. Some lingering rain showers
are expected in the morning to afternoon.

Tuesday night looks a little warmer and windier than previously
expected, limited frost risk to protected valleys. Lows are
forecast to be in the mid to upper 30s.

Elevated to potentially significant fire weather is possible on
Wednesday as a cool and dry airmass filters through the area.
Look for winds gusting to 30-40 mph with minimum RH values of
30-40% or lower.

Lows in low to mid 30s Wednesday night and Thursday night will
lead to more widespread potential for frost.

The forecast looks dry through Saturday, with temperatures
warming back into the 70s over the weekend. 20-40% chances of
rain exist Saturday night and Sunday.

DISCUSSION...

There is a 20-30 percent chance of thunderstorms late this
morning into the early afternoon mainly north of Interstate 44.
If these storms form then lightning would be the primary threat.

Confidence is high that severe thunderstorms will form west of
the area and move into southeast Kansas and western Missouri
late this afternoon into this evening, generally after 4pm. Initially
large hail up to 2-3 inches in diameter, damaging winds to 70 mph and
tornadoes are the primary threats. However storms will likely
begin to form into line segments during the mid to late evening
hours with damaging winds and a tornado becoming the primary
threats as the line segments move east through the area. Frequent
cloud to ground lightning is likely. Additional updates are likely
as we approach this severe event.

There is a flooding threat however it appears to be localized and
dependent on storms moving over the same areas. Highest rainfall
amounts are expected north of Interstate 44.

Areas of frost are possible both Thursday and Friday mornings.

Elevated fire weather danger returns Wednesday through Saturday

A NWS storm survey concluded that an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 95 mph occurred near Fair Grove, Missouri. The width of the tornado was 100 yards. The tornado remained on the ground for around two miles while uprooting and snapping several trees. The tornado heavily damaged an outbuilding while also causing minor damage to a residence. A tornado debris signature was also present on radar.
