What happened

The episode as NWS HNX wrote it up.

A moisture deficient trough moved through central California on November 18. This system did not have much precipitation with it as some stations from Fresno County northward picked up a tenth of an inch or less of liquid precipitation. However, the system did produce a period of increased winds as a result of a strong pressure gradient during the afternoon and evening of November 18 over mountains and deserts of Kern County. Several stations measured gusts exceeding 45 mph and a few low impact stations had gusts in excess of 60 mph.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before the first event, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Hanford, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Nov 18, 1:36 AM PST, 8 hours 51 minutes earlier. Its key messages:

  • 1. A weak system through Monday morning has a 15 to 45 percent probability for at least 0.01" of rainfall from Fresno County north. There is also a 40 to 60 percent probability for at least 1 inch of snow, mainly above 7000 feet, around Yosemite NP. 2. A Freeze Warning is in effect from Monday Night through Tuesday morning for the rural portions of the San Joaquin Valley, with lows as cold as 30 degrees forecast. 3. Temperatures trend warmer with highs a few degrees above average late in the week. 4. Confidence is improving for a stronger system to approach 4he region next weekend into early the following week that would bring heavier precipitation to central California.

.KEY MESSAGES...

1. A weak system through Monday morning has a 15 to 45 percent
probability for at least 0.01" of rainfall from Fresno County
north. There is also a 40 to 60 percent probability for at least
1 inch of snow, mainly above 7000 feet, around Yosemite NP.

.DISCUSSION...
A system passing through Northern California this morning will
bring precipitation to the region, as well as gusty winds
through and below pass level in Kern County through the day. The
moisture is displaced to our north, so QPF totals across the
region will be quite limited to just a couple hundredths of an
inch north of Fresno County. In the Sierra Nevada, very light
snow is forecast. Currently looking at a 22% probability for 1
inch of snow ore more at Tioga Pass for this event.

Strong onshore gradients will keep wind gusts elevated on the
lee slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains through the afternoon
today. The Wind Advisory for the lee slopes remains in effect
through 2 PM this afternoon. This gradient will relax overnight
Monday night and into Tuesday, leading to a decrease in wind
gusts.

As the winds weaken due to the system exiting the region, there
will be less mixing Monday night/Tuesday morning. For us, that
will lead to colder overnight lows. The Freeze Watch for the
rural portions of the San Joaquin Valley has been upgraded to a
Freeze Warning. NBM probabilities show a 50% - 90% probability
of morning lows being at or below 32 degrees Tuesday morning.
In other words, slightly higher confidence for freezing morning
lows compared to the frost/freeze event we had last Sunday
morning.

Wednesday through Friday will feature a warming trend across the
San Joaquin Valley, with highs being several degrees above
normal by Friday - low 70s as afternoon highs. This trend will
be mainly attributed to high pressure axis forming over the Four
Corners region. The northern most periphery of our forecast
area has the potential to see off and on rain through this time
period due to what looks like a significant storm system
impacting Northern California.

Ensemble guidance is getting more confident that the
aforementioned storm system impacting NorCal will makes its way
south Friday evening into Saturday. This storm has more than
enough precip with it to bring another wetting rain across
Central California. Snow levels are projected to be above 8,000
feet on Saturday, as this looks to be a warm storm system. In
the extended period through early next week, an active jet
pattern is conceivable, meaning more valley rain and mountain
snow for Central California. This is further supported by the
CPC's 6-10 outlook showing a tilt in the odds towards above
average precip compared to what's normal for mid to late
November.

&&

.AVIATION...Light winds and VFR conditions will prevail thru
the period at all terminals. Mountain obscurations possible
along the windward slopes of the Sierra during the overnight
hours.
