Additionally, isolated flash flooding was reported in southern Utah due to rainfall associated with the system.

.SYNOPSIS...A significant winter storm will impact the region
through Monday. Another, weaker system will impact mainly southern
Utah Tuesday into Wednesday. Another potentially significant storm
may impact the area late in the upcoming week.

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Tuesday)...A broad trough is moving
onshore over California this afternoon, with ample moisture from
an atmospheric river continuing to stream across northern Utah
this afternoon. Precipitation, primarily valley rain and mountain
snow, is filling back into the area after a relative lull this
morning, focused over a boundary over central and southern
portions of the Wasatch Front. However, some pockets of lower snow
levels have been observed with heavier rates. Precip in this
unseasonably warm regime will continue into the evening before we
move into the next phase of this rather substantial and long
lasting storm system.
The Pacific trough is on track to slide into the Great Basin by
Sunday morning. As it does so, the boundary will pivot
northwestward, becoming a strengthening cold front. Snow levels
will drop along and behind this boundary overnight into Sunday
morning across northwest and far northern Utah. However, as is
often the case with developmental features, seeing a wider than
usual range of possibilities with regard to the timing and amount
of cooling behind the front during this period. The time of
changeover to snow in these locations could have big impacts on
the amount of snow those areas see, so uncertainty is higher than
usual with amounts in locations like eastern Box Elder county, the
Cache Valley, and portions of the northwest desert. However,
overall trend in the guidance has been toward an earlier
transition to snow in these areas, so have noticeably raised snow
totals here. Given the anticipated amounts and impacts, have
issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Cache Valley and eastern Box
Elder county, and have gone with a Winter Weather Advisory for the
northwest desert, though some warning amounts are possible for
areas near the Idaho border.
Through the remainder of Sunday morning and the afternoon, the
front will continue southeast across the area, allowing
precipitation to spread southwest into central and southwest Utah.
This will also bring colder air farther south, facilitating a
transition to snow for the remainder of the northern Utah valleys,
including the Wasatch Front. Given the transition to snow is not
expected for many areas until well into Sunday afternoon,
accumulations for these valleys will be significantly less than
the valleys of far northern Utah, potentially limiting impacts.
Still, like with far northern Utah, more uncertainty than usual
exists concerning the time of the transition. With this in mind,
have opted not to include valley headlines for the Wasatch Front
in this forecast package and will hope the time of transition
becomes clearer for the midnight shift with another round of data.
Periods of precipitation, primarily snow, will continue throughout
the remainder of Sunday and into Monday morning as the trough
slides east across the area, becoming more terrain focused as cold
pool instability becomes more dominant. Though the bulk of
precipitation should end Monday morning, some mountain showers are
expected to continue, primarily over northern Utah, through the
day Monday. After all is said and done, northern Utah mountains
will have easily seen a top ten event in terms of QPF, something
very much needed given the ongoing drought.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Tuesday)...The first week of the new year
continues to look like an active one. We'll start this discussion by
talking about chances for snow in the greater St. George region.
Snow levels Tuesday morning look to reside right around 3,000 ft,
quite close to the surface. With a disturbance focused to track
across Arizona, a decent chance for precipitation is forecast. This
is forecast as a rain/snow mix in the morning becoming quickly all
rain as snow levels rise. The chances of snow accumulation at or
above 1/10 of an inch is 15%. This disturbance is forecast to bring
an additional 2 to 5 inches of snow in the Pine Valley Mountains and
Brian Head.
Ensembles from Wednesday into Thursday all indicate ridging across
our region. This would generally warm our temperatures up but it
doesn't necessarily mean all chances of precipitation will cease.
Moisture may overrun the ridge as indicated by the ECMWF and some
areas by end up with light snow mid-week as a result.
Toward the end of the week and into the weekend, the forecast
becomes uncertain. This is because a deep area of low pressure off
the west coast is forecast to bring a series of disturbances onshore
through the weekend. The timing of these disturbances and how much
moisture they bring is tough to forecast about a week in advance. In
fact, the latest deterministic runs build a ridge of high pressure
further into our area instead of having much influence from these
low pressure disturbances. Trends will continue to be monitored.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will transition to MVFR/IFR
conditions after 00Z as rain becomes heavier across the terminal and
CIGs/VIS drop to MVFR with occasional VFR CIGs. Winds will remain
light and variable with a predominant southerly flow. Snow levels
will remain ~6kft through tomorrow morning before falling to the
valley floor after 18Z.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions will transition
to MVFR/IFR conditions overnight for most of Utah and SW Wyoming.
Light to moderate rain fills in across low elevations of the entire
region between 00-06Z which will drop CIGs and VIS to MVFR and IFR.
Snow will impact high elevations resulting in IFR conditions
throughout the night. Rain transitions to snow across far northern
and western Utah overnight and then the remainder of Utah, aside
from lower Washington county, by tomorrow afternoon. Winds across
northern Utah will be light and variable with gusty southerly winds
across southern Utah.

Some selected reports included 7 inches in West Jordan, 10 inches in South Jordan, 12 inches in Daybreak, and a max report of 16.4 inches in Sandy. At National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office Salt Lake City, UT, 6 inches of snow was recorded for the event. In addition, it was reported that heavy snow caused a carport at an apartment complex to collapse, resulting in damage to 15 cars.

The Wasatch Mountains South of I-80 zone saw some of the highest snowfall totals through the event. Several SNOTEL and snow safety community observations including those at Solitude Mountain Resort, Snowbird, Alta Ski Area, and Brighton reported between 2.6 to 4.8 inches of snow water equivalent, resulting in approximately 31 to 44 inches of snow. The highest reported snowfall total was 52 inches at Sundance Mountain Resort. In addition, it was reported that at least a dozen 50 foot trees were felled near Sundance Mountain Resort due to the heavy snow, bringing down power lines in the area.
