.SYNOPSIS...A major winter storm will move out the region this
evening. High pressure will bring a steady warming trend through
early next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Friday)...The storm system that has been
bringing significant snow to the area over the past few days is on
its way out. However, some showers remain over northern Utah this
afternoon, primarily over the higher terrain, as cold pool
instability lingers. As the trough finally exits this evening and
the area loses the extra energy from daytime heating, the showers
will dissipate. Going Winter Storm Warning expires at 00Z which
seems to align roughly with the end of the remaining
precipitation. In the wake of the trough, temperatures remain very
much on the cold side across Utah and southwest Wyoming, with
maxes running close to 20F above seasonal normals for many
locations.
High pressure is on track to makes its way into the Great Basin
Thursday behind the exiting trough, ushering a steady warming
trend with dry and stable conditions that will continue into early
next week. More details can be found in the long term discussion
below.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Friday)...Long term forecast period looks
to offer a long awaited reprieve from the prolonged cold and wintry
pattern which has held through much of the year. Guidance suggests
on Saturday a weak shortwave and associated baroclinic zone will
graze the northern portion of the forecast region, but will bring
negligible impacts to the greater overall trend. To that end, other
than this feature, ensemble and deterministic guidance show good
agreement on broad ridging developing across the western CONUS into
the upcoming week, with the strongest influence across the local
forecast region expected Monday as the ridge axis translates
eastward across the area.
Ensemble mean shows peak H5 heights rise to ~575-580dm with H7 temps
warming to ~2-6C Sunday on into Monday. With this, anticipate dry
conditions and more sunshine, along with surface temperatures rising
substantially and likely hitting their max values on Monday before
the ridge begins to shift eastward. For the SLC area, Monday shows
good odds to see the first temperatures exceeding 70 degrees (~90%
chance), with non-zero chances of exceeding 70 degrees on Sunday
(~40% chance) and Tuesday (~60%) as well. For the St. George area,
odds are favorable for temperatures to exceed 80 both Monday and
Tuesday (~90% chance), with 80+ also possible as early as Sunday
(~50% chance). Suffice to say, some of the warmest temperatures of
the year look to be in store for the end of the weekend into early
next week. While the warmup to above normal temperatures is welcome
to many, those venturing out, especially into the backcountry of
southern Utah, should be aware of the potential for locally
hazardous conditions associated with snowmelt (such as inundation of
area slot canyons).
By Tuesday, guidance shows moderate consensus in increasing
troughing developing over the PacNW as the ridge shifts east,
locally resulting in mid level height falls and and end to the
warmup with temperatures trending back cooler. Less confidence is
noted in the evolution of this feature Wednesday onward, though
expect to see at least modest PoPs creep back into the forecast.
&&
.AVIATION...KSLC...Convective showers continue this evening as cold
air aloft and now increasingly sunny skies destabilize the
environment. Expecting precipitation to end entirely by 8PM. Outside
of isolated showers, VFR CIGs and VSBY persist. Conditions
improve overnight as high pressure builds in and quiet weather
returns for Thursday.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...One last round of showers from
this storm cycle as thermally driven instability kicks off scattered
development across northern Utah primarily, as well as isolated
portions of southern Utah's high terrain. Outside of isolated
showers, VFR conditions prevail and CIGs will lift and dissipate
through the evening. High pressure and quiet weather area-
wide returns for Thursday.

Rapid warming produced a natural avalanche across the opened portion of State Route 210 (Little Cottonwood Canyon Road) on the 6th. The avalanche flowed into Snowbird, crossing the Chickadee trail and lift.
The town of Alta and Snowbird Village returned to interlodge until the 7th. State Route 210 was closed with limited openings for uphill during the morning and evening on the 8th and 9th due to concerns with midday warming and natural avalanche cycles.
State Route 190 (Big Cottonwood Canyon Road) was closed with limited openings during the morning and from late afternoon through the evening from the 8th through the 10th due to concerns with midday warming and natural avalanche cycles.
A large wet avalanche ran across UT-210 at 1215 PM Monday 4/10 at White Pine Chutes, fully blocking the road.

A mudslide/debris flow in Fruit Heights on the 8th destroyed a barn, killed undefined livestock, and injured two individuals who were trapped in the debris. Both were rescued and temporarily hospitalized with injuries.
