The start of what would be one of the hottest summer months on record began in July. North and Central Texas experienced above average temperatures from July 10 through the end of the month. Several prolonged Heat Advisories were in effect, and at times Excessive Heat Warnings were needed. The average temperature for the month of July ranked in the Top 10 warmest for climate sites in both North and Central Texas. However, it was the month of August that really tipped the average temperature for the summer season into the Top 5. Unfortunately several fatalities were reported in the DFW Metroplex related to heat.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fort Worth TX 537 AM CDT Mon Jul 10 2023 ...New Aviation, Short Term... .SHORT TERM... /NEW/ Update: Elevated convection continues to fire in a line oriented from Montague county through Rains county. These cells are a result of moist ascent over a stalled front currently across Central Texas. A general weakening trend will occur after sunrise as the cells move southeast. Some additional showers and storms may develop closer to the front this afternoon across Central Texas. Otherwise, it will be mostly sunny and hot today with highs in the 90s to around or just above 100. The only exception will be across the northeast zones where clouds will linger, keeping high temperatures in the middle and upper 80s. We will leave the current Heat Advisory as is for now and allow the next shift decide its fate beyond today. Still expecting convection to move in from the west this evening and overnight with the best chance of storms north of the I-20 corridor. No major changes were made to the previous forecast package with this update. 79 Previous Discussion: /Through Monday Night/ A welcomed summer cold front continued moving south through Central Texas late this evening. Temperatures north of the front were already in the 70s and lower 80s as of 10 PM with mainly middle and upper 80s south of the front. Overnight lows will cool into the 70s region-wide with even a few upper 60s possible across the north. After a quiet evening, showers and storms will continue to develop through the night with increasing return flow over the front. Storm coverage will be scattered, especially near and north of the I-20 corridor. Showers and storms will be possible through the morning hours Monday but should finally weaken or move to the east by midday with the loss of the nocturnal LLJ. The front is progged to lift slowly northward Monday afternoon. Weak moisture convergence on the lifting front and strong large scale subsidence provided by the ridge to the west should prevent any new storms from developing during the afternoon. Highs Monday will be hot once again across Central Texas with upper 90s to near 103. Lower and middle 90s are expected across the remainder of the forecast area, except for the northeast where temps will struggle to get out of the 80s. We will leave the current Heat Advisory south of the I-20 corridor through Monday but it will likely need to be expanded northward later in the week. A weak shortwave will move around the northeastern periphery of the ridge to the west Monday afternoon, resulting in scattered thunderstorms across West Texas. These storms will likely organize into a complex as they move east Monday night. The best storm chances will be generally north of the I-20 corridor. A few strong to severe storms will be possible with damaging winds being the primary hazard. 79 && .LONG TERM... /Issued 334 AM CDT Mon Jul 10 2023/ /Tuesday through Sunday/ Scattered convection from the overnight complex moving in from the west should be ongoing across mainly North Texas on Tuesday morning. Much of this activity will weaken after sunrise, but a few of the high res models do advertise a lingering MCV over the region which may spark new convection later in the day and farther south into Central Texas. As a result low PoPs will be advertised over most of the CWA, but the best chances will be over the northeast zones and early in the day. The additional clouds and potential rain-cooled air means high temps will be near normal for most of the region, but humidity will be higher than Sunday and today, so max heat indices will range from 105 to 110 over most of the area. The heat advisory will likely be expanded. The upper level ridge will build into the region from the west on Wednesday and there are no indications of any convection forming upstream over West Texas and the High Plains. This means our chances of rain will end for a few days, while strong subsidence results in a warming thermal profile with some slight drying. High temps will jump to above 105 degrees over the western zones Wednesday, near 100 along the I-35 corridor, and upper 90s in the east. Temps will climb a degree or two more on Thursday. Heat indices will continue to range from 105 to 110, with some spotty areas eclipsing 110. Meanwhile southerly winds are forecast to increase midweek into the 10 to 20 mph range, which will take some of the edge off of the daytime heat. However, in part due to these winds, low temps will be unseasonably warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s. The increased winds will also enhance the wildfire danger, especially west of I-35 where air temps above 105 will result in minimum RH in the 20s. The upper ridge will weaken by late in the week so we will see some subtle cooling. Models today have backed off a bit on the prospects for a weak cold front and chances of rain next weekend. Instead most of the ensemble members are keeping this just to our north. Some low PoPs are advertised along the Red River Saturday night into Sunday, but otherwise will show a dry and continued hot forecast for most of the region. TR.92 && .AVIATION... /NEW/ /12Z TAFs/ The main aviation concern with this TAF package will be scattered storms this morning and evening/overnight storms. The convection this morning is a result of moist ascent over a stalled front across Central Texas. Although a storm or two could briefly reach DAL or DFW over the next couple of hours, VCTS at all the metroplex TAF sites should be sufficient based on current coverage and movement. Storms should dissipate a few hours after sunrise and no additional storms are expected until a complex of storms arrives from the west overnight. Scattered to broken middle and upper level clouds associated with the morning storms will linger through much of the day with few to scattered Cu between 3500 and 5000 ft. Clouds will likely clear in the early to mid evening hours but increase in coverage overnight with the approach and eventual arrival of the storms from the west.
