.SYNOPSIS...
A large low pressure system over Canada will send a few waves
of low pressure across our region into early next week. Among
those, a weak cold front is expected to cross our region Sunday
into Sunday evening, with widespread precipitation expected
ahead of the front. Broad, weak high pressure will build in mid
week, before a trough approaches our region at the end of next
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Heat and humidity are the headlines for today. Thunderstorms and
showers too with increasing probabilities later this afternoon.
The CAMs models are showing tstms today with coverage less than
yesterday, but still with locally heavy rains (if you get one).
We will continue with mostly low chance pops for the afternoon
as coverage will be limited. Not the greatest amount of confid
in fcst however. A small shower has developed across Delmarva
recently. A weak boundary seems to be across the southern areas
and will push north this afternoon. A few showers along the sea
breeze are expected too.
Temperatures today will be very similar to Friday, in the upper
80s to near 90, though sunshine may be rather limited during
the afternoon. The dewpoints are mostly in the 70s across the
area and will slowly trend upward this afternoon. These muggy
conditions will continue tonight and Sunday.
Heading into tonight, showers and thunderstorms may begin to
increase as greater forcing and deeper moisture pushes in from
the west and southwest. Precipitable water values range from 1.5
to 2.0 inches today, but a plume of even higher values from 2 to
possible 2.5 inches will lift across our region overnight into
Sunday. That will support showers and thunderstorms capable of
very heavy rain, and a Flash Flood Watch has been issued from
midnight tonight to midnight Sunday from New Castle County DE
and Cape May County NJ northward. There may be a couple more
focused periods of showers and thunderstorms, one late tonight
into early Sunday morning with an initial shortwave trough,
then another from midday possibly into early Sunday evening as
daytime heating and instability will be present as a weak cold
front approaches. Once again, in addition to the threat of
flooding, there will be a marginal risk of severe weather for
most of the area on Sunday, particularly due to locally gusty
winds with any stronger storms. With the flow throughout much of
the atmosphere parallel to the approaching front, there will be
the potential for training storms. Areas that have received
heavy rainfall recently, where soils are very saturated, as well
as the usual flood-prone urban and other low-lying areas will
be most at risk for flooding, particularly from near I-95
northwestward.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front should cross off the coast Sunday evening. It is expected
to be a weak front in terms of temperature gradient (temperatures on
Monday are forecast to even be a few degrees higher than Sunday
primarily due to more solar insolation), however, we should feel
some relief with respect to humidity/dewpoints (dewpoints in the 60s
as compared to mid 70s on Sunday). This also looks like the best
chance for dry weather across the region thanks to a weak surface
ridge building into the region.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The large mid and upper level low will propagate towards the Hudson
Bay region. Even with this further north position, our region will
still see some short wave troughs associated with the larger low
approach our region and bring additional rain chances. Confidence is
low in the exact timing of these troughs, but at this point the
favored times appear to be Tuesday and again Thursday night into
Friday. With these trough passages there will be a better chance for
widespread rain. However, even outside of these periods, there will
still be a slight chance for diurnally driven showers and storms if
any local sources of lift (like a sea breeze or orographic lift) can
develop.
As for temperatures, the early week cold front will be very weak, so
temperatures should stay near or slightly above normal (and we are
currently at the time of the year when the average high temperatures
are at the highest of the year), but at least some guidance depicts
cooler air filtering in at the end of the week.

.AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through Saturday... The bulk of the afternoon into early tonight
should be VFR, though isolated showers and thunderstorms will
be possible, mainly away from the coast. That could result in
local/brief restrictions. South to Southeast winds 5 to 10
knots.
Tonight through Sunday...Increasing coverage of showers and
thunderstorms. MVFR and even IFR CIGs and VSBY becoming more
common, especially on Sunday, but conditions will vary. Wind
south-southwest 5 to 10 kt, but gusty and erratic around
thunderstorms.
Outlook...
Sunday night...Returning to VFR as storms move off the coast by 06Z.
However, there is potential (40%) for patchy fog to develop after
06Z. Light (less than 5 kt) northwesterly winds. Moderate confidence
in the overall pattern, but low confidence in fog potential.
Monday...VFR. W winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming S at night. Moderate
confidence.
Tuesday through Tuesday night...Primarily VFR except in the vicinity
of SHRA and TSRA primarily Tuesday afternoon. SW winds 10 to 15 kt
with gusts up to 20 kt, becoming W to NW 5 to 10 kt at night.
Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. SW winds 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisories will likely not be required through
Sunday. Southerly winds of 10-15 kt will increase a notch to
15-18 kt or so for Sunday with some gusts approaching 25 kt in
some areas, so we will have to keep an eye on that time period.
Seas of 2 to 4 ft will increase to 3 to 5 feet, highest off the
NJ coast, by Sunday afternoon.
Outlook...
Sunday night...Any elevated seas should subside below 5 ft on Sunday
night. Otherwise, winds and seas should stay below SCA criteria.
Monday through Wednesday...Winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria. However, gusty winds will be possible in the vicinity of
any thunderstorms especially on Tuesday.
Rip Currents...
A southerly wind increasing to around 10 MPH is expected for
Today. Breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium
period southeasterly swell. We will carry a MODERATE risk for
the development of dangerous rip currents for the southeast
facing shoreline of Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Both
Monmouth County in New Jersey and Sussex County in Delaware are
forecast to be LOW risk with the southerly wind being parallel
to their coastlines.
A southerly wind around 15 MPH is anticipated for Sunday with
breaking waves around 2 to 3 feet and a medium period easterly
swell. The increasing wind speeds and waves heights will likely
result in a MODERATE risk of rip currents for New Jersey. For
now we are forecasting a LOW risk for the Delaware beaches, but
there remains uncertainty with the wind direction which could
increase the risk here to moderate.
