As this system approached the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, a cold front slowly moved across the area beginning in the early morning hours of February 15. Behind this front, cold air dropped temperatures below freezing and moisture increased at the low levels. With the upper level system moving closer to the area, this provided enough lift to generate precipitation along and behind the cold front for mainly the northern half of the Panhandles. Snow was the main precipitation type with this system. However, some rain and sleet was also reported in a few locations. Gusty northerly winds also trailed behind the cold front which led to greatly reduced visibilities along with the heavy falling snow. In general, a majority of the northern half of the Panhandles received 2 or more inches of snow with the highest snow total with this system being 8 inches for the far western Oklahoma Panhandle. With temperatures dropping quickly behind the front, any snow and slush that had melted on roadways quickly froze. This caused hazardous driving conditions on the morning of February 16.

Summary:
Impactful snow is expected in the northwestern Panhandles today,
with Cimarron County favored to receive around or a bit more than
half a foot of snow.
Meanwhile, breezy conditions are possible in the southern Texas
Panhandle which may kick up some blowing dust, although impacts from
winds and dust look to be a notable step downward compared to
Tuesday.
Details:
08z WV satellite reveals a robust upper wave over N AZ with
southwesterly flow aloft over the Panhandles ahead of this feature.
While plentiful mid-level moisture is seen over our northwest, a dry
slot is beginning to advance over the southern Panhandles. At the
surface, a cold front has mostly stalled in the northern Panhandles.
Today into tonight, as the upper wave advances eastward over N NM,
equatorward side upper jet will drive cyclogenesis at the surface,
with the surface low shifting eastward through the southern TX
Panhandle. As the developing surface cyclone enhances the pre-
existing temperature gradient on the currently stalled cold front,
resulting uptick in 850mb frontogenesis should, along with QG
forcing associated with the upper wave itself, drive robust ascent
through both the low and mid-levels. Progged thermodynamic profiles
suggest snow with temperatures generally below freezing through the
column or through all but the near-surface layer, with deep
saturation including the favored snow production layer seen for
several hours. Thus, think this will largely be a snow event with
moderately impactful amounts possible where both lower-level
frontogenetic forcing and mid-level QG forcing are maximized - most
guidance focuses this on the northern and in particular the
northwestern Panhandles. Farther south, approaching dry slot looks
to greatly limit precipitation potential and have continued to trend
PoPs downward with many areas now 40 percent or less and that may
even be too generous at this point.
Remaining uncertainty focuses on exact southeastward extent of the
impactful snow. Some short term guidance suggests areas roughly
along a Stratford-Gruver-Perryton-Beaver arc may end up with a bit
more snow than forecast. These are the areas that progged soundings
suggest may see that relatively shallow above-freezing layer persist
a bit longer due to southerly warm advection ahead of the developing
surface low, with NBM PoT grids favoring rain. Am skeptical rain
will in fact be the dominant form of precip as strong ascent and the
impact of falling frozen hydrometeors should cool the low levels
quickly. Was only modestly successful at shifting more of the QPF
into the snow rather than rain category in the gridded forecast
without generating other errors in required forecast editing tools.
In any case, have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Sherman,
Hansford, Beaver, and Ochiltree Counties. Finally, it should be
noted that, given the potentially erroneous dominance of rain
mentions in the gridded forecast in this area, automated WPC WSSI
is suggesting a "flash freeze" event may occur in these same areas
as the cold front pushes southward tonight. Given skepticism
about the rain dominance in this area, am skeptical a true flash
freeze is in the cards. Nevertheless, whether snow or freezing
standing water, expect slippery road conditions tonight.
Elsewhere, breezy conditions are expected in the southern Texas
Panhandle which may kick up another round of blowing dust. That
said, wind speeds and thus dust should see a large step downward
compared to Tuesday. Have maintained the collaboration concerns
driven Wind Advisory in the southern Texas Panhandle due to
continued collaboration concerns.

Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph on Thursday morning may cause wind
chill values to fall into the -5 to -10 degree range across the
western and central Oklahoma Panhandle and the northwest Texas
Panhandle. We may need to issue a Wind Chill Advisory for these
areas on future shifts. Thursday will be coldest day through early
next week with highs in the upper 20's to the lower 40's. Clear
skies and light winds Thursday night will allow lows to fall into
the single digits and teens.
High temperatures are expected to get warmer each day through Monday
and then temperatures may cool off some for Tuesday as the next
system affects the area with clouds and possible light rain.
Saturday through Monday could all be windy days as upper heights
fall ahead of another trough moving this direction from the
northwest. Elevated fire weather conditions may be possible on these
days over parts of the southern Texas Panhandle.

At AMA...skies are expected to remain VFR through the forecast.
Southwest winds will pick up to near 30 knots with higher gusts by
mid to late morning. Winds will then switch to the northwest at
around 20 knots with higher gusts early this evening.
At DHT and GUY...conditions will go from VFR to MVFR at DHT in
snow by late this morning and it will last until late afternoon
and then conditions will become VFR. Northeast winds at DHT this
morning will be replaced by northwest winds at 25 knots with
higher gusts around mid day. Winds will then decrease slightly by
this evening. GUY will become MVFR by mid morning and then IFR
conditions will prevail when the snow begins around mid day.
Conditions are expected to improve to MVFR once the snow ends by
mid evening. Gusty northeast winds will become northwest late this
afternoon in the 20 to 25 knot range with higher gusts and they
will last through the night.
