What happened

The episode as NWS RNK wrote it up.

A surface low progressed eastward across the northeastern U.S. through the day on January 20, 2023. A sharp pressure gradient developed between the surface low and surface high pressure pushing in behind it. Strong cold air advection behind the cold front combined with strong winds aloft led to strong and gusty winds over the mountains of northwest North Carolina.
