Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 617 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 305 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 A few isolated thunderstorms possible tonight across northeast New Mexico, then strong storms possible in the vicinity and east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains Thursday afternoon. On Friday, windy conditions are expected with critical fire weather conditions. Hot to very hot temperatures remain the story this weekend into early next week, especially the lower elevations along and south of Interstate 40. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Thursday night) Issued at 305 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 Dryline pushes west into eastern NM tonight with isolated thunderstorms possible across the far northeast portions of NM. Otherwise, expect winds to diminish across most locations with overnight low temps in the 50s and 60s across most lower elevation locations. The dryline on Thursday will likely remain near or just to the east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, and thus a very moist (characterized by dewpoints in the 50s and low 60s) and unstable (ML CAPEs ~2000 J/kg or more) airmass will be in place across far east and northeast NM. Additionally, veering, and increasing winds with height suggest bulk shear will be sufficient for large hail in any storms that are able to mature near and east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. In fact, SPC has a slight risk (15% chance for significant hail (>=2")) for severe thunderstorms tomorrow just east of Santa Fe. There could be strong gusty winds with these storms as well. Temperatures will remain hot most locations, the exception being the far northeast portion of the state where temps will be ~10 to 20 degrees cooler than Wednesday. The thunderstorm activity will linger into the evening before the activity ceases and drier conditions take hold once again. && .LONG TERM... (Friday through Tuesday) Issued at 305 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 Drier conditions are expected on Friday, but the winds will increase. A compact, negatively tilted upper low will swing to the northwest of the area and result in a deepening lee cyclone across eastern Colorado. Consequently, winds will be in the 20 to 35 mph range with gusts in the 45+ mph. A fire weather watch is in effect as a result (more in the fire discussion). This may be close to advisory in some locations. That being said, dry and hot conditions will remain especially in the vicinity of Roswell where temps >105 degrees are likely to continue. Heights rise as the high pressure builds a little northward this weekend into early next week. Thus, temperatures continue to be hot with 90s across all of the lower elevations and at least low 100s near ABQ and south and east. For reference, the forecast has near 100 degrees in Roswell this weekend, increasing to near 113 degrees on Tuesday of next week. Dangerous stuff for sure, be sure to remain hydrated and limit exposure during the hottest part of the day if possible. Expect continued heat products for this area. No real good signals for significant precipitation as well so the headlines will be mainly hot, dry, and breezy (each afternoon will continue with 15 to 25 mph winds) this weekend into next week. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 608 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 VFR conditions are currently in place across northern and central New Mexico early this evening. Some high-based cumulus and virga (evaporating rainfall) showers will be possible through mid evening across central to southwestern New Mexico, leading to just sprinkles and mainly gusty and erratic winds at the surface. Low level moisture will then enter much of eastern New Mexico tonight into early Thursday morning, potentially bringing in mist/fog and low stratus clouds. The potential for MVFR to IFR ceilings/visibility will be mostly over northeastern areas of the state. The low level moisture will then lead to strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon as the atmosphere destabilizes. Large hail and damaging downburst winds may accompany brief heavy downpours along and east of a KRTN to KLVS to KROW line Thursday. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 305 PM MDT Wed Jun 21 2023 ...ELEVATED TO NEAR CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER TODAY AND THURSDAY WITH WIDESPREAD CRITICAL WITH AREAS OF EXTREME CRITICAL CONDITIONS FRIDAY... Hot and dry on Thursday with increased moisture across the far eastern portions of the area (east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains). A few strong storms will be possible as well due to this moisture. Winds will be 10 to 25 mph with a few higher gusts Thursday afternoon, fostering elevated to near critical fire conditions. That being said, a system aloft will move to the northwest of the area Friday, resulting in 20 to 35 mph winds with gusts 40 to 50 mph potentially during the afternoon.
