Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1015 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 112 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 Strong northwest winds will develop today, mainly for locations from the east slopes of the central mountain chain eastward to the plains. Brisk northwest winds continue tonight and Sunday, again mainly for spots east of the central mountain chain. High pressure begins to move in on Monday, allowing winds to weaken and temperatures to warm, especially across eastern NM by mid next week. A major winter storm system may be in the cards for next weekend. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Sunday) Issued at 112 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 The upper level trough axis is currently overhead and moving east rapidly, taking areas of light precipitation with it. Stronger northwest flow aloft will prevail today behind the departing trough and will bring windy conditions to areas along/east of the central mountain chain. The previously issued Wind Advisory remains in effect with no changes planned, although it is looking less likely to hit advisory threshold across most of Lincoln Co. Otherwise, today will be cold, with high temperatures below normal most areas. The below normal temperatures combined with breezy to windy conditions will create wind chill values in the 20s and 30s across much of central and western NM this afternoon. Northwest flow aloft will increase overnight and bring 700mb winds up to between 50-70kts across north central and east central areas. The southern peaks and east slopes of the Sangre De Cristos will be in the path of these stronger winds aloft, with the potential for mountain wave activity and sufficient downward forcing to bring damaging wind gusts to the surface. Issued a High Wind Watch for those two forecast zones beginning at 06Z tonight. Additional Wind Advisories will likely be required for neighboring forecast zones and certainly by Sunday after some daytime mixing. Sunday is looking similar overall to Saturday, although warmer by 5-10 degrees and with the stronger winds more confined to the east slopes of the central mountain chain and adjacent highlands. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday night through Friday) Issued at 112 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 Strong northwest flow aloft begins shifting eastward Sunday night thanks to a ridge of high pressure translating east over the PACNW. Light to moderate northwest winds continue Monday, but nothing like the speeds forecast for this weekend. The overall weather pattern is forecast to go briefly to a positive Pacific North American (PNA) pattern this week prior to returning to a negative PNA and a much more active pattern for NM next weekend and beyond. Quiet weather underneath a broad ridge of high pressure is forecast Tuesday through Thursday. GFS and ECMWF agree that southwest flow aloft will be on the increase Friday, ahead of a strengthening upper-level trough and the potential for a major winter storm system for next weekend. Global models are in very good agreement regarding the potential development and timing of a significant closed low over over large portions of the western U.S. next weekend. Slight changes in the placement of the low center will make major sensible weather changes for next weekend. Latest ECMWF came in farther north thanks to less in the way of polar jet energy dropping southward into southern CA and a slightly stronger jet over northern Canada. Many iterations of a similar forecasts are likely in the coming days when eventually the models should settle on a solution. The potential for a major winter storm system next weekend for NM remains. And the current active area of convection in the EPAC is suggestive of previous bowling ball closed low forecasts from the operational ECMWF, helping to draw more of the polar/Asian-Pacific jet from the Gulf of AK farther south with increased upper level diffluence/divergence. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1015 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 A few flurries and mt obscurations persist over the Sangre de Cristo and Sandia Mountains late this morning, but these will continue to diminish through early afternoon. Strong west to northwest winds have already developed, especially across eastern NM. These winds will continue through at least 00Z with gusts between 35 and 45kt. After 00Z, winds will decrease slightly, but stay breezy through the overnight hours with gusts between 25 and 35kt along and just east of the Central Mt Chain. LLWS will likely develop at KLVS through the overnight hours. Winds will ramp back up shortly after sunrise mainly along and just east of the Central Mt Chain once again, with gusts between 40 and 55 kts possible. Lesser wind gusts can be expected elsewhere. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 112 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2023 A windy weekend is forecast under strong northwest flow aloft behind the departing trough, especially along/east of the central mountain chain. Elevated fire weather conditions are forecast across eastern portions of the area given the strong winds and lower humidity, although minimums are forecast to remain above critical threshold. Otherwise, a warming and drying trend will begin Sunday and continue through mid week with high temperatures trending well above normal by Wed/Thu.
