Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 341 PM EDT Tue Jul 25 2023 .SYNOPSIS... An upper air trough and weak surface low will cross the area this evening and overnight. High pressure arrives across the area Wednesday. The high will merge with a larger high over the western North Atlantic. Persistent southwest flow will result in hot and humid conditions through the end of the week. A cold front is expected to cross the area from the northwest sometime Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... ***As of 3:30PM...Shower and thunderstorm activity remains widespread across our region. The entire CWA remains under a slight risk for severe weather per SPC, which much of the region remaining under a slight risk for excessive rainfall per WPC. Several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have already been issued across our region this afternoon with severe wind damage being reported across multiple areas. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 8PM this evening for all counties in our CWA.*** The main story of the near term will be the anticipated continued convection as shortwave energy aloft pushes eastward. Into this evening, the environment should remain prime for severe weather and thunderstorm activity. Mix layer CAPE remains around 1000-1500 J/kg across the region with values of 500-1100 J/kg of DCAPE and 30-35 kts of shear being present as of 2PM. CAM guidance supports a similar environment and widespread activity across the region continuing until 8-9PM with activity beginning to diminish thereafter. However, more recent CAM guidance suggest convective activity continuing for our more southern regions in Delmarva even until around 1-2AM or so. The main concern/severe threat given the environment is the possibility of damaging wind and hail accompanied with frequent lightning. Along with the severe potential, the potential for excessive rainfall should not be understated or overlooked. An 18z sounding launched by OKX (decent proxy given the airmass over the region) shows an environment which is capable of producing excessive rainfall and flooding from thunderstorms; i.e., a CAPE profile which is tall coupled with a deep warm cloud layer and decent PW and humidity. Thunderstorms into this evening will be capable of producing mainly localized flooding, especially if they are slower to move across areas. Luckily, once mid level shortwave energy passes to our east, the potential for precipitation is expected to decrease quickly overnight with the rest of near term looking to become relatively quiet. Winds will look to become light tonight with high RH; patchy low clouds and fog across the region is possible, mainly where heavy rainfall occurred. Surface high pressure should begin to build over the region later tonight and hold a firm grasp over the region for Wednesday. No PoPs are in forecast for the Wednesday period. Highs in the upper 80s across the region can be expected; the urban corridor may see the low 90s. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... The persistent mid level long wave trough that has been protecting us from excessively hot temperatures is expected to lift for the end of the week. The flow across the northern states should become somewhat zonal and a ridge over the western North Atlantic is forecast to retrograde a bit. Meanwhile, a surface high off the coast will establish a south to southwesterly flow of hot and humid air into our region. We are anticipating a buildup of heat and humidity beginning on Thursday when our first excessive heat headlines of the year are continuing to look increasingly likely. Warm, moist advection will ensue on Thursday under southwesterly flow through much of the column. 850 temps continue to look to reach 18-20C which will support highs in the low to mid 90s. Dew points will rise into the low to mid 70s with the southerly flow and this will result in heat index values reaching the upper 90s to low 100s in the afternoon. There will be a persistent south to southwest breeze around 10-15 mph through the day, with gusts perhaps as high as 25 mph. Some shortwave energy will slide through aloft, mainly focused to our north and west, where we will continue to carry 20-30% PoPs with peak heating aiding in scattered shower and thunderstorm development. Some additional development of storms is possible farther south into the evening, however confidence is lower on this. A southwest wind around 10 mph will persist Thursday night, which, along with warm advection aloft, will keep low temperatures elevated in the mid to upper 70s south of I-78. This will not offer any relief from the heat overnight. The heat will continue into Friday as this will likely be the hottest day of the week (potentially of the year). The continuing southwesterly flow will maintain warm, moist air through the day on Friday. 850 temps will reach around 20-22C and latest NBM probs continue to indicate a >95% chance of temperatures exceeding 90 degrees; the probability of exceeding 100 degrees is very low though. The past few runs of MOS guidance as well as GFS and Euro ensembles continue to support this trend, so few changes were made for this update in terms of high temperatures both Thursday and Friday; we have maintained the forecast for widespread high temperatures in the mid 90s. With dew points continuing in the low to mid 70s, heat index values of up to 100-105 degrees are anticipated. The one question for both Thursday and Friday will be how much the dew points mix out, and subsequent effects on heat index values. Taking a look at the latest GFS and NAM forecast soundings, deep boundary layer mixing is suggested. This would mean dew points perhaps mixing as low as the upper 60s, but temperatures would be a couple degrees warmer as a result. Resulting heat index values would still be in the 100-105 degree range regardless, and have continued with this theme for this update. Southwest winds will once again be near 10-15 mph with gusts of 20 mph possible. Some isolated thunderstorms are possible north of I-78 (20-30% PoPs), though most areas will remain dry under mostly sunny skies. For Friday night, the southwest winds will continue around 10 mph, keeping the temperatures elevated in the mid to upper 70s south of I- 78. This will make for a second consecutive night with little relief from the daytime heat. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... The last day of the excessive heat and humidity looks to be Saturday when a slow moving front moves across the area. High temperatures mostly in the low/mid 90s with dew points in the 70s will create apparent temps in the upper 90s/low 100s range. We'll continue with the scattered showers/tstms for Sat/Sat night attm. Following Sat, drier air with temperatures close to normal will round out the weekend and carry into the beginning of next week. The upper trough will be carried NE of our area while H5 ridging stays across the Southern/Western parts of the country. This will leave a broad NW flow across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Overall, a dry pattern for our region. If any showers occur, Delmarva will be the favored areas for rain. && .AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... .Tonight...
