Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 126 PM EDT Tue Jul 18 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A weak cold front will stall near the area tonight into Wednesday. This front will move back to the north as a warm front Thursday before a stronger cold front moves through the region on Friday. High pressure will build in from the west over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Convection continues early this afternoon on a trough that runs north-south along the I-95 corridor. The focus of storms for the rest of the afternoon should stay in New Jersey and southern Delaware, moving offshore by this evening. With PW's approaching 2 inches, heavy downpours will be a concern, along with isolated severe weather. There may be patchy fog tonight especially in those locations that had rain during the day. Clouds and additional convection will redevelop after midnight as another shortwave approaches and we enter the left exit region of another jet streak. Convection will taper off Wednesday morning, but additional showers and thunderstorms will form Wednesday afternoon mainly along and south of a front that should lie across the I-95 corridor. At this point the chances for severe weather or flooding appear to be low. It will be another very warm and humid day but a few degrees cooler than Tuesday as there should be a bit more cloud cover. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... The overall unsettled pattern we've been in looks to continue through the short term. The general trend should be for convection to diminish Wednesday evening into the overnight due to the loss of heating but still can't rule out a few isolated storms around. Lows range from the 60s over most of eastern PA and interior NJ to around 70 over the urban corridor and most of Delmarva. For Thursday, the day should begin mainly dry with chances for showers and storms starting to ramp up beginning in the afternoon as the next more organized system approaches from the west. This means showers/storms should initiate over central and western PA before starting to move into our eastern PA zones by mid to late afternoon. However the best chances for more organized and widespread showers/storms looks to come through Thursday night as a low pressure system tracks across southern Ontario helping to push a cold front into the region. In fact the deep layer forcing could be fairly strong with an upper level wave taking on a neutral to negative tilt as it moves through and SE PA becoming situated near a left jet exit region. Limiting factor for severe weather may be timing being mainly at night with marginal deep layer shear values around 30 knots. Still, think there is at least some potential for severe storms along with flooding/flash flooding threat as PWATs will be around 1.8 to 2.0 inches or so. It remains very warm and humid with highs Thursday mainly in the 80s to around 90 and lows Thursday night mainly in the 60s to around 70. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... A slow moving cold front will be moving through the area during the day Friday and this will keep a good chance for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Biggest threat looks to be heavy rain creating the potential for flooding and/or flash flooding. The good news is that heading into the weekend the front should start to clear the area to the east and this means the weekend should be mainly dry and also cooler and less humid. It is worth noting though that some of the guidance has trended a bit slower moving the front off the coast and if this trend were to continue it could result in some showers continuing into Saturday. For now though, we keep showers out of the forecast except for the mention of slight chances over portions of NE PA and northern NJ. Sunday should feature partly to mostly sunny skies with seasonable temperatures and relatively comfortable humidity levels to finish out the weekend. Beyond this time, chances for showers and storms start to increase once again through early next week as the next system approaches. && .AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... An underlying long period east to southeast swell will likely be present, resulting in a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. A light northwest to west wind on Wednesday morning is forecast to become southerly around 10 MPH in the afternoon. Breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period east to southeast swell. There should still be an underlying long period swell from the east and southeast.
