Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 433 AM PDT Wed Sep 20 2023 .SYNOPSIS...A quiet morning gives way to a mix of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon as the next weather system nudges into the region. Over the next few days, showers and thunderstorms continue with temperatures trending much cooler. Much of the forecast area sees their first morning with low below the 32 degree mark by Friday morning. && .SHORT TERM...Today through early Friday morning Today sees the last of fairly comfortable temperatures as highs climb into the 70s this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms, along with breezier winds ahead of the next weather system won't help much in terms of warming things up. The leading edge of the cold front is expected to move in to northern Nevada during the nighttime hours tonight with shower activity continuing across much of the forecast area. Overnight lows in Humboldt and Elko counties are forecast to be in the 30s. Elsewhere still sees lows mainly in the 40s. During the daytime is when we'll feel the real change in weather as afternoon highs on Thursday are forecast to be anywhere from 10 to almost 20 degrees cooler than the previous day. Highs range from the 50s to the low 60s. Showers and thunderstorms continue as the cold front slowly continues to push out of the state, but temperatures in higher elevation may just be cold enough to support some snowfall. The probabilities are pretty low right now, and ensemble guidance is suggesting a 50% chance of no snowfall at all, but a 25% chance of seeing less than half of an inch in the highest mountain peaks. What we're getting at is if any snowfall is able to fall, it should stay isolated to the highest mountain peaks and little to no accumulation comes from it. Any impacts from weather in the short term will come from showers and thunderstorms, not snow. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday The large upper level trough is expected to move east and out of the state during Friday. The early morning, thunderstorms chances (20-60%) is expected to be mainly for northeastern Elko County. As the day progresses, the chances are expected drop to below 10% and clearer skies in the evening. Highs are expected to be cooler than normal with highs in the 50s to 60s and lows in the 30s to 40s with some areas expected to reach at or just below freezing. Westerly winds expected to increase in the afternoon at 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 20-25 mph. Saturday and Sunday are expected to have clearer skies as the low pressure trough moves out and a slight ridging moves over the western U.S. Temperatures expected to gradually rise with Saturday highs in the 60s to 70s and Sunday highs expected in the 70s to 80s. Lows for both nights are still expected to be in the 30s to 40s. Winds expected to be light at 5-10 mph on Saturday. Sunday southerly winds expected to increase for central and northern Nevada at 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph. Monday is expected to continue to have a gradual warming with high temperatures in the 70s to 80s and lows in the upper 30s to 50s. Southerly winds expected to increase in the afternoons at 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph for central and northeastern Nevada, and Humboldt County expected to have southerly winds at 15-20 mph with gusts as high as 25-30 mph. Monday is not expecting much of weather activity, however models are showing more of an agreement that a low pressure trough is expected to extend down into the southwestern U.S. pushing the upper ridge eastward and bringing more chances (below 10%) of weather activity by Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to have chances (10-20%) of isolated thunderstorms, moving into northern Nevada by Tuesday, and throughout the region by Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to be cooler with highs in the 60s to 70s and lows in the 30s to 40s. Afternoon winds from westerly/southwesterly direction expected to increase to 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph for both days. && .AVIATION... Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold frontal boundary that will move through the state Wednesday. Shower activity is expected to develop around 2000Z along a line north of KTPH to KEKO to far northeastern Elko county, moving closer to KELY by early Thursday morning. Gusty southwest winds are expected across much of central and northern Nevada Wednesday afternoon in addition to gusty outflow winds from showers and thunderstorms. Strong north winds behind the cold front are expected to affect northwestern Nevada Wednesday evening including at KWMC where sustained wind speeds of 20 knots with gusts to 30 knots are possible. Patchy blowing dust is also expected but visibility is not expected to be drop significantly but brief periods of MVFR VIS are possible. && .FIRE WEATHER...Fire weather concerns continue to be mitigated by the plume of moisture stretching through the region, leading to showers and a mix of wet and dry thunderstorms. Winds today are breezy with gustiest winds of 20 to 25 mph expected in Zone 437 and the northern portion of 424, but minimum relative humidity values are in the range of 15% to 20%, and they will go up from here.
