Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 100 PM PST Wed Nov 15 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Active pattern will see a pair of systems moving through the Silver State starting tonight with a second system for the weekend. However, high pressure looks to reassert control for the start of the next workweek. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday Large cut off low pressure area off the coast of California continues meander slowly as it remains blocked by upper ridge axis over the the southwestern US. A small shortwave trough that is currently over south central California will be ejected by its parent low northeastward into Nevada. Timing for this shortwave has been consistently depicted in model runs starting this evening for central Nevada, into Thursday morning and afternoon for northern NV. Shower chances for central NV will quickly rise from 20% this afternoon to about 60% to 70% tonight into Thursday morning. N NV sees shower chances start this evening time with the best chances occurring during the over night hours with probabilities in the 50% to 60% range. Precipitation type will favor rainfall over area roadways and summits, as snow levels will remain above 7000 feet. Amounts will still be light with C NV valleys seeing up to 0.15”, northern NV valleys could see up to 0.10”, passes could see up to 0.25” in N NV and up to 0.40” for C NV. Snowfall will be confined to the mountain peaks with up to 6” is possible. Temperatures will cool as this system moves through with highs upper 40s to upper 50s Thursday and lows falling into the low 20s to low 30s Friday morning. Southerly winds will be breezy this afternoon and evening over central NV, with speeds at 10 to 20 MPH with gusts up to 35 MPH. Winds will relax Thursday, as northerly winds of 5 to 10 MPH develop behind the departing system. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday Friday, an offshore low continues to reside off the California coastline. Winds will generally be light and variable, with some breezy winds possible across the high terrain of Northwestern Nye county. Highs will be in the 50s, with increasing clouds throughout the day. Valley rain and mountain snow showers will start across central Nevada in the late afternoon, before spreading northward overnight. This will be a result of the offshore low finally making its progression eastward. Lows Friday night will be in the low 30s, with some 20s at higher elevations. By Saturday, the upper level low is forecasted to lift north and east, allowing for some off and on showers across the state through the day. In general, a 25-45% chance of showers are expected at this time. Highs will be in the 50s for most. Skies will be overcast with the system overhead. Valley rain and mountain snow showers are forecasted through the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday. Lows will be in the 20s to low 30s. Sunday, a quick progressive secondary system comes out of the Pacific northwest giving another round of showers to northern Nevada. With this quick moving system, cold air will move in, dropping snow levels throughout the day. Mid-level slopes around 6700 feet and up may see a mix or a transition to snow showers, however no major snow accumulations are currently expected. Highs for Sunday will be in the upper 40s to low 50s with breezy to gusty winds, the strongest being across northern Elko county. Cold air will continue to filter into the state through the day and into Monday. Lows Sunday night will likely be in the teens to 20s. Snow levels are expected to drop to valley floors briefly Monday morning, however no precip is currently forecasted at those times. Monday and beyond, an upper-level ridge looks to build into Western CONUS, with ensembles in pretty good agreement. This ridge looks to hold to about mid-week, where another upper-level trough from the Pacific northwest may bring some unsettled weather back to the Silver State. Highs Monday will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s, warming into the upper 50s to low 60s, by Wednesday. Overnight lows will generally be in the 20s during this window, warming each night. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at all terminals for the next 24 hour period. Lowering ceilings and showers will begin to occur at southern terminals KTPH and KELY after 00Z. These showers will work north during the evening and overnight hours and likely impact all terminals in some form after 06Z.
