Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 742 AM PST Sat Mar 11 2023 .SYNOPSIS...An unsettled weather pattern will continue into early next week. Generally light rain and snow showers are expected through Monday across portions of the state before a stronger Storm system impacts the region Tuesday into Wednesday bringing widespread rain and higher elevation snow in addition to gusty winds. Chances of precipitation will persist through late next week with temperatures closer to or just below normal. && .UPDATE...Radar and near term progs are showing a precipitation band stretching across the US Highway 50 corridor. Nevada Dept of Transportation webcams are showing varying levels of snow accumulation on the roads and ELY ASOS has reported about 0.18 inches of melted precipitation since 12Z, while TMT, P68, and ELY are showing light snow showers. Have issued winter weather advisory for all elevations for the US Highway 50 corridor through 9am this evening. Grids have been published, text products will be sent shortly. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 218 AM PST Sat Mar 11 2023/ SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night A quasi-stationary frontal boundary across central Nevada will lift northward today into northern Nevada. This will be the focusing mechanism for light rain and snow showers for northern portions of the state today. Snow accumulation will be concentrated in higher elevations but some valley accumulation is expected in Elko county above 5000 feet today. Travel impacts should be mitigated by higher sun angle and temperatures climbing above freezing this afternoon for most areas. Winds will be much lighter today although northern Nye county could see occasional gusts of 25 mph from the west-southwest. The frontal boundary will lift towards the NV/ID border Sunday. Southerly flow will bring warmer temperatures to northern Nevada as well as a wintry mix to along I-80 and points northward. Temperatures will be several degrees cooler than yesterday in a post-frontal air mass especially across northern Nevada. Highs will be in the 30s to lower 40s across northern Nevada with some lower 50s returning to northern Nye county. With southwesterly flow continuing through the weekend, expect temperatures to climb further Sunday with highs in the 40s to lower 50s. Although surface temperatures and snow levels will be rising, temperatures aloft along mid slopes and upper elevations along ranges will remain quite cold which will inhibit faster snowmelt at higher elevations. LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday Unsettled conditions will dominate our weather through the middle of next week as a series of troughs move onshore and cross Nevada. The first trough will affect mostly Humboldt and Elko counties bringing mountain snow showers and valley rain showers Monday. A second trough will bring moisture from the Pacific Ocean across northern and central Nevada Tuesday and Wednesday. This will cause another round of persistent valley rain and mountain snow showers. The trend for the greatest chance for precipitation on Wednesday continues to be White Pine and southeastern areas of Elko counties. Valley QPF amounts range from 0.25" to 0.50" during this two day time frame. Southwest winds ahead of the passing trough will bring temperatures into the middle 40s to lower 50s for valley locations Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain in the valleys remains the most common type precipitation during the event however, some snowfall could mix in late Wednesday night and a isolated mountain snow shower is possible early Thursday morning as the precipitation departs. A ridge will build into central and northern Nevada through the day Thursday resulting in drier and continued warm conditions with valley temperatures in the 40s and 50s Thursday and Friday. Another chance for isolated snow showers returns for Saturday. AVIATION...Ongoing shower activity along a frontal boundary across central Nevada will slowly move northward today reaching the I-80 corridor including KWMC, KBAM and KEKO by this afternoon. MVFR to IFR and lower conditions can occur at all TAF sites except KTPH due to low clouds and precipitation. Mountain obscurations will occur with this system with whole ranges obscured from valley base to mountain peak. IMC will likely be present across the silver state tonight and Saturday. There is a slight chance (10%) of VCTS mainly south of KELY. Winds will be considerably lighter today with strongest winds across northern Nye county and KTPH. HYDROLOGY...Stream and river gages across the area have responded to recent precipitation and snow melt but remain well below even action stage. Some overland flooding has been observed in a few locations due to recent snowmelt and rain. With temperatures generally warming through early next week, snowmelt will continue at a steady pace but rapid snowmelt is not expected as temperatures in higher elevations remain quite cold along with overnight lows where deeper snowpack remains getting down below freezing each night mitigating excessive snowmelt. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
