Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 143 AM PDT Sun Jun 11 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Shower and thunderstorm chances, including the possibility of severe thunderstorms is increasing for Sunday and Monday as the active weather pattern over NV starts its third week. Temperatures on the other hand, thanks to the clouds and rain, looks to remain slightly below seasonal levels. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Upper low will transit south- central Nevada today will bring more chances for showers and thunderstorms Today and again Monday. A stout upper low currently over the Gulf of Catalina will continue to push inland as it begins to lift NW while slowly weakening. As the low approaches today, it will set the environment up for the potential of severe weather not only for today but for Monday as well. As to the ingredients PWAT values are above normal running at 0.6” to 1.0”, mid level lapse rates are good with a range of 8 degrees C per km, and LI’s are in the -2 to -5. Overall convective variables of MUCAPE in the 1300 to 2000 range, bulk shear will be better, but wont be widespread around 25KT to 55KT. So model storm mode hints that linear multi-cell cluster thunderstorms will be favored Today, but a few low topped supercell thunderstorms will also be possible either embedded in the lines, or out ahead of the lines as the SPC has most of northern Nevada under a marginal risk. The main threats from these storms will be heavy rainfall, Half dollar size hail, and gusty outflow winds up to 65KT. Another threat possible today will be localized flooding from heavy rainfall as storm motions will be on the slow side, with the training of storms possible as well today. Rain rates will be high at up to 1.5” per hour in the stronger cores, and given the already wet ground, the WPC has N NV under a marginal risk for the potential of excessive rainfall. Temperatures, thanks to clouds and precipitation will be a touch cooler today and Monday with Highs ranging in the low 70s to mid 80s, while overnight lows will be in the mid 40s to mid 50s. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday Upper cut off low continues east out of southern Nevada Tuesday as upper troffing concurrently moves thru the PacNW, digging south over the central Rockies mid week. Meanwhile, numerical models have remained consistent with another cutoff low forming off the southern California coast Wednesday. There is some uncertainty in exact position of the cutoff, but indications continue to be that northern Nevada will reside under generally NW flow the latter half of the week with some modest moisture potentially sneaking into central Nevada from the south depending on the position of the cutoff. Afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms will be over the area Tuesday although activity will be more modest than Monday. Most activity will be focused in and near Elko County. Rain totals will again be highly variable given that afternoon convective rain showers and thunderstorms are expected. Concern for erratic and gusty out flow winds and pea sized hail under strong thunderstorms will also be present. Afternoon shower activity will be even less Wednesday and thru the end of the week with only isolated and/or dry showers expected. Energy embedded in the mean northwest flow moving across the region will also aid in shower production. Limiting factor will be PWATs as they are currently progged less than 0.50” for most of the forecast area the latter half of the week providing very little fuel for showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures begin a gradual warming trend Tuesday with near normal readings by Saturday. Look for daytime highs Tuesday to be in the upper 60s to upper 70s with overnight lows in the low 40s to low 50s. && .AVIATION...Showers and thunderstorms today will bring (a 40-70% chance of) rain to KEKO KBAM KWMC and KELY. Any stronger showers may bring (5-10% probability) of brief MVFR conditions to airport locations. Lower chances for precipitation (15-25%) exist KTPH Sunday. VFR conditions forecast later tonight into Monday morning as storms dissipate into the late evening and overnight hours. && .HYDROLOGY...River and stream flows remain elevated along portions of the Humboldt River as well as Lamoille Creek. The active weather pattern persists, with afternoon and evening rain showers and thunderstorms. Probabilities remain low that any given thunderstorm will cause increased hydrologic impacts. Smaller creeks like Lamoille will see diurnal fluctuations, but larger rivers that are slower responding will continue to run high.
