Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 629 PM PDT Sat Jul 8 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Breezy and seasonably warm conditions across the region through Monday will elevate fire danger across portions of southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. High pressure building over the area next week will result in a return of above-normal temperatures Tuesday and excessively hot conditions across our southern deserts and the Colorado River Valley mid-week through at least next weekend. && .UPDATE...Clear skies and breezy south winds continue this afternoon into the evening. Gusty southwest winds will pick up Sunday afternoon. Coupled with dry conditions, fire danger will be high. Fires that start will have the ability to spread rapidly. For this reason, outdoor burning is discouraged. Please ensure that there are no dragging chains on your vehicles, refrain from idling on dry vegetation, properly dispose of cigarette butts, and always ensure that campfires are fully extinguished before walking away from them. The Fire Weather Watch for tomorrow (Sunday) was upgraded to a Red Flag Warning with this afternoon's forecast package. Additionally, temperatures will continue to slowly increase through the remainder of the weekend and start of next week. The Excessive Heat Watch was upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning this afternoon for the Colorado River Valley including Lake Mead Recreation Center, as well as southern Mohave and most of San Bernardino counties. This Excessive Heat Warning goes into effect on Tuesday and will continue through Sunday. Additional areas further north will continue to be considered through the week as forecast confidence increases regarding the strength and position of the incoming ridge. No changes were made to the forecast this evening, as it looks to be in good shape. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...229 PM PDT Sat Jul 8 2023/ .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday. A compact low pressure system off the southern California coast this afternoon will approach tonight and move across the area on Sunday. This is expected to increase winds across the region by mid-late Sunday morning and continue into the early evening hours. Gusty southwest winds 25-35 mph are expected with wind speeds dropping off after sunset then redeveloping on Monday. Temperatures through Monday will be seasonal under mostly clear skies. Increasing winds Sunday and Monday will result in high fire danger across parts of the area as strong gusts combine with very low humidity and dry fuel conditions. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for both Sunday and Monday. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to slowly increase to several degrees above normal Tuesday through Thursday before a warming trend peaks temperatures across the area next weekend into the early part of the following week. There is good agreement among the various guidance showing temperatures warming to around 5 degrees above-normal on Friday then increasing to around 8-10 degrees above-normal next weekend and into early the following week. The deterministic GFS has trended a bit lower with high temperatures next Sunday, but then ramps high temperatures to all-time records in Las Vegas Monday and Tuesday of the following week, which is currently outside of our forecast domain. The NBM and ensemble means are showing these temperature trends, but are generally in the 112- 115 degree range. Being 8-10 days out, I have no confidence in temperatures actually reaching - let alone exceeding - all-time records, and very low confidence in daily records being threatened. That said, we are entering the time of year when Las Vegas has tied our all-time high temperature a number of times in the past...just saying. The Excessive Heat Watch has been upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning for the Colorado River Valley beginning Tuesday, then expands to include much of San Bernardino and central and southern Mohave counties Wednesday through Sunday. Looking at trends of all the guidance, decided to hold off on expanding the warning northward or even issuing a watch for other areas further north due to the uncertainty of onset time for excessive heat. For the Las Vegas Valley, given present forecast temperatures and run-to-run trends, excessively hot conditions of 112 degrees or better should hold off until the end of next week. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...The biggest concern will be periods of southeast winds, with gusts up to 20 knots possible, this afternoon from about 20 to 23Z and Sunday afternoon from about 19 to 22Z. In the morning, expect light easterly winds, and in the later afternoons, expect a shift to gusty south-southwest winds. Clear skies expected. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Expect south to southwest winds gusting 20 to 25 knots in most areas in the afternoons, settling down around sunset, except in the Barstow area where westerly gusts persist until around midnight. Clear skies expected. && .FIRE WEATHER...The Fire Weather Watch for Sunday was upgraded to a Red Flag Warning across portions of southern Nevada, the Colorado River Valley, and portions of Mohave County where gusty winds, very low humidity, and dry fuels combine - resulting in high fire danger.
