Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 146 PM PST Fri Jan 13 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Rain and snow showers are expected on Saturday afternoon and evening before changing over to all snow Saturday night into Sunday morning. Roads could be slushy and icy in spots. The next chance for snow showers is on Monday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday afternoon A Pacific trof will begin to spread moisture into Nevada on Saturday afternoon, and showers will continue into early Sunday morning. Snow levels are trending a bit higher (5000 to 5500 feet in northern Nevada and 6000-6500 feet in central Nevada Saturday afternoon), but are expected to drop to valley floors overnight. This will limit snowfall accumulations in lower valleys as a rain and snow mix is expected at the start of the precipitation. Nevertheless, 1-2 inches of snow is expected in higher valleys and passes, with the exception of the Ruby Mountains, as well as White Pine and northeastern Nye counties, where 2 to 5 inches of accumulation is expected in valleys and 6-12" in the mountains. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for these areas. Winds will be breezy in northern and central Nevada and some gusts up to 35 mph could cause some patchy blowing snow. There will be a few leftover showers on Sunday afternoon, but it will dry out for the most part. Lows tonight will be mainly in the upper teens through the 20's. Highs over the weekend will be in the 30's through the lower 40's. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through next Friday The next band of precipitation moves through on Monday through Monday night and digs deeper into the state, which will target central Nevada more than northern Nevada. Even so, only 1 inch or so of accumulation looks possible at this time in central Nevada, with less than 1/2" in the northern Nevada valleys that do receive showers. Another snow band looks possible on Wednesday night and Thursday which would target northern Nevada more, though confidence remains low on the details for this band. The system is trending further north with each model run and right now looks like it will mainly effect the mountains of Elko County. Valley impacts look unlikely. Highs will remain mainly in the 30's throughout the long term period. Lows will be in the teens and 20's. There are some signals that cooler temperatures will arrive as early as Friday morning though as a drier air mass moves in and some single digits may start to creep in. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions are expected for KWMC, KBAM, KEKO through this evening with MVFR conditions possible overnight. VFR conditions return for KEKO and KBAM late tomorrow morning and continue into tomorrow evening. MVFR conditions are expected late tomorrow morning into the evening hours at KWMC. Breezy conditions are expected today at KTPH and KELY with MVFR conditions tomorrow at KELY beginning around 1100Z. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
