What happened

The episode as NWS CAR wrote it up.

An intensifying ocean low tracked northeast to the Maritimes through the 15th. The intensifying low then slowly crossed the Maritimes through the 16th...with a trof extending back across the region. Precipitation expanded across Downeast areas through the afternoon of the 15th. High pressure to the northwest of Maine slowed the arrival of precipitation across northern areas until the night of the 15th. Warmer air aloft was wrapped back across the region from the Maritimes while low level cold air persisted. This resulted in a wintry mix of snow...sleet and freezing rain. The wintry mix persisted across the region through the 16th into the early morning hours of the 17th. Warning criteria snow and sleet accumulations occurred during the morning of the 16th...mostly based on sleet. Snow accumulations across northern and eastern Maine generally ranged from 2 to 5 inches...locally up to around 6 inches. Sleet accumulations generally ranged from 1 to 3 inches...locally up to 4 inches across portions of Washington county. Ice accumulations generally ranged from one to two tenths of an inch.
