A weak surface front across our area will dissipate or shift offshore later tonight into Tuesday. A stronger cold front approaches Tuesday and then crosses our region Wednesday. High pressure builds in Thursday and remains in place through Saturday, then a cold front may approach from the west Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... No changes from previous discussion. Prev disc...The axis of a mid level short wave trough extended from western Pennsylvania to the Carolinas early this morning. The feature will progress to the east and it should pass off our coast this evening. Until that time, we will continue to see some precipitation in our region. A weak surface low was located off the coasts of Delaware and southern New Jersey early this morning. It is forecast to move slowly northeastward and farther out to sea today and tonight. We are anticipating scattered showers this morning. Daytime heating should bring MUCAPE values up into the 1000 to 1500 J/kg range this afternoon, so we are expecting another round of thunderstorms to develop. Once the short wave axis passes to our east this evening it will likely take any lingering precipitation with it. Locally moderate to heavy rainfall is possible again today due to the abundant low level moisture. The forecast wind profiles suggest only a limited potential for strong gusts this afternoon. A light wind flow tonight is expected to allow for the development of some low clouds and patchy fog. Today's maximum temperatures are forecast to range mainly from the upper 70s to the middle 80s, with tonight's lows mostly in the 60s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... A few more days of humid and unsettled conditions. The weak surface front that has remained across our region will either dissipate or shift offshore into Tuesday. This should result in less of a focus for convective development for much of Tuesday. A stronger cold front will then be approaching our region from the west later Tuesday and Tuesday night as an upper-level trough begins to close off over the Great Lakes. The cold front then works its way across our region Wednesday. It is this front that will bring relief from the days of convection and humid conditions. As the cold front approaches Tuesday and Tuesday night, some weak shortwave energy may be present ahead of the front. While there could be some low clouds and/or fog to start Tuesday, boundary layer heating through the day will result in enough instability that could lead to some showers and thunderstorms especially along any surface convergence areas such as a sea/bay breeze. Given less certainty with the coverage, kept slight chance PoPs in for the daytime (mainly afternoon) Tuesday. As we go through Tuesday night and Wednesday, the main precipitation from the stronger cold front is anticipated. With the timing of the main showers/thunderstorms being overnight into Wednesday, severe thunderstorms are currently not anticipated as instability will be more limited. It does appear a broken line or clusters of showers and some thunder arrives early Wednesday morning, then some additional convection may occur through the afternoon as the cold front or perhaps a secondary one moves through. It is possible that much of the convection occurs during the first half of the day, especially if the faster model guidance is correct. For now, the main impact is the potential for localized flash flooding from downpours given plenty of moisture still in place ahead of the cold front and especially for areas that have recently picked up excessive rainfall amounts. Drying is expected to start overspreading the area especially Wednesday night within a post- frontal regime. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Summary...Forecast to be dry with below average high temperatures and dew points in the comfortable range Synoptic Overview...A closed low is forecast to open up and lift away from our area late Thursday night and Friday, with surface high pressure building in and remaining in place through Saturday. High pressure weakens Sunday with a cold front potentially approaching from the west. For Thursday...A cold front is currently forecast to be offshore, however cyclonic flow and cold air advection in its wake will result in cooler temperatures and dew points dropping. It appears that plenty of drier air overspreads the area and therefore dry conditions are expected in the wake of the cold front. For Friday through Sunday...As the lingering upper-level trough continues to lift away from our area Friday, surface high pressure is forecast to build in from the west. This high remains in place through Saturday, however it is then forecast to weaken into Sunday. A cold front might approach from the west during Sunday. The air mass associated with this high pressure system will be cool and dry, and given overall a possible cold front hanging back to our west Sunday this time frame is kept dry. The presence of an incoming upper-level trough or two are forecast to pull Hurricane Lee northward and parallel well offshore of the Mid-Atlantic coast Friday through Saturday. It still looks like there will be no direct impacts to our area, however a prolonged period of larger swells/waves and dangerous rip currents are expected. && .AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Scattered showers and thunderstorms will bring locally heavy rainfall along with periods of MVFR/IFR conditions. Wind favoring the northwest 6 knots or less. Medium confidence. Tonight...Starting off VFR in the evening, with MVFR/IFR conditions developing overnight. Vis restrictions from fog is most most likely, though cannot rule out low stratus either. Variable wind 5 knots or less. Medium confidence. Outlook... Tuesday...Areas of low clouds and fog possible for a time in the morning, then mainly VFR through the day with a shower or thunderstorm possible. Report of several trees snapped and uprooted along a wooded area of Adams Road with several houses receiving roof damage and a couple sheds collapsed. Time estimated from radar. This was a result of a tornado.

An EF-0 tornado occurred on the afternoon of September 11, 2023, in the Dagsboro area of Sussex County, Delaware. |The brief tornado began along Adams Road just east of Dagsboro where damage to multiple structures and trees was observed. A shed in a backyard of a home on Adams Road had partial roof and wall collapse, and an additional larger and more structurally sound shed just feet from the first one was shifted off of its foundation, had the door blown off, and had partial roof collapse. Damage to three homes along Adams Road was noted with glass windows blown out and partial siding and shingle loss. Numerous |large softwood trees were uprooted along the wood line behind the homes on Adams Road along and had large branches snapped off of the trunks.
Further south on Adams Road, very close to the intersection of Tingle Lane, minor loss of siding was noted on a home as well as some more tree and limb damage. This is likely where the tornado reached its maximum width of around 370 yards.
The tornado then continued a short distance down Piney Neck Road to near the intersection of Wild Goose Way where another softwood tree was uprooted in the backyard of a home. The tornado likely occluded at this point and lifted as no further damage was found further downstream.
