Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected each afternoon this weekend, mainly for areas south of US-50. Dry and warm conditions will prevail for much of the upcoming week. && .DISCUSSION... A narrow band of rain showers, associated with a belt of rich, subtropical moisture, is lifting northeastward across Mono and Mineral counties according to latest radar observations. 12-hour rainfall totals in Mono County have been light to moderate with up to 0.3" along the Sierra crest and only a few hundredths in the lower valleys. Further surface heating, coupled with the ample moisture aloft, will promote isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon for areas generally south of US-50. Chances of storms for this area vary from 20-30% per blended guidance. Hi-Res ensembles seemingly agree on convective initiation around 2 PM PDT and lasting well into the early evening. 20Z mesoanalysis paints DCAPE of 1000-1200 J/kg near and south of the US-50 corridor, suggesting strong outflow winds up to 45 mph will be the primary hazard (A gust to 43 mph was reported at Hawthorne airport shortly before 1 PM). Other potential hazards include cloud-to-ground lightning, very small hail, and brief heavy rain. While much of the convection will taper off around sunset, CAMs hint at a few lingering showers in Churchill and southern Pershing counties overnight. Sunday will be quite similar to today regarding showers and storms, featuring rain showers from Mono County to Mineral County in the morning and isolated to scattered storms generally south of the I-80 corridor during the afternoon. Blended guidance once again has a 20-30% chance of storms for this area Sunday afternoon. For the upcoming week, high pressure aloft will flatten and allow zonal flow to overspread the Sierra and western Nevada. As a result, dry and mild weather will prevail throughout the week with temperatures reaching the 70s for Sierra communities and 80s for lower western Nevada valleys each day. -Salas && .AVIATION...
