Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
119 PM PDT Mon Apr 3 2023

.SYNOPSIS...Widespread gusty winds expected to continue into
Tuesday with sharply colder temperatures as a cold front drops
through the region. Snow showers will continue across parts of
southeast Nevada and northwest Arizona this evening before
dissipating. Cooler than normal temperatures linger into Wednesday
before a warm up starts Thursday into the weekend.
&&

.DISCUSSION...Through next Monday.

Impacts with potent trough moving through the area will continue
into the evening. We are seeing widespread dust across the Mojave
Desert associated with at least some 60 mph pre-frontal westerly
winds. Blowing dust has been more isolated with the post-frontal
northwest winds across Esmeralda and Inyo Counties. In addition to
all the blowing dust, widespread snow showers falling across Lincoln
County where we could see 1-3" of snow above 6000 feet from Pioche
north to White Pine County along Highway 93. Snow showers with
accumulations in the Spring Mountains and mountains of northern
Mohave County of 3" or less above 7000 feet.

Potent trough will continue to slowly march east into the Four
Corner region tonight and Tuesday. Unfortunately, it will remain
breezy to windy through Tuesday as winds slowly diminish. Well below
normal temperatures expected into Wednesday with some record lows
and/or record low high temperatures possible.

Still expecting a period of quieter and warmer weather Thursday-
Monday. Although, after looking at the 12Z GEFS some uncertainty in
just how warm it may get exists due to the position/strength of the
ridge axis.
&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Impactful conditions will continue
through much of the TAF period. Southwest winds gusting to nearly
40kts at times will shift around to the northwest by early afternoon
as a cold front moves through the Vegas valley. Winds will remain
elevated behind the front, with gusts to 30kts still likely into
tonight before decreasing slightly by Tuesday morning. Gusts to
25kts will then continue into Tuesday afternoon. Blowing dust may
drop visibilities to less than 5sm at times through this afternoon.
A few showers are also possible with the frontal passage, although
most precipitation is expected to remain over the higher terrain.
CIGs will likely fall to between 7000-9000ft as the front passes the
afternoon. Otherwise, CIGs above 10kft can be expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Gusty winds will continue area-wide into Tuesday
morning as a cold front continues to push through the region. The
strongest winds are expected at KDAG, with a greater than 50% chance
of winds gusting over 50kts out of the southwest this afternoon.
KBIH will be behind the front resulting in winds gusting to 30kts at
times. Gusty winds will develop in the lower Colorado River Valley
today, although speeds will not be as high. Areas of visibility
reduced to 2 miles or less due to blowing dust is also likely across
the Mojave Desert. CIGs will likely fall to between 7000-9000ft as
the front passes through a site. Otherwise, CIGs above 10kft can be
expected.
&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
