.SHORT TERM...A storm force front is moving through the Gulf this
evening. ASCAT winds do show a swath of winds between 55-60 kts
moving to the E Gulf. The main impacts tonight will be increasing
winds along the coastal communities and through the inner
channels. Additionally moderate to heavy rain is expected through
tonight. The High Wind Warning remains in effect for POW tonight
through early Thursday morning. A High Wind Warning has also been
issued for Yakutat for gust around 60 mph this afternoon through
late tonight.
For Thursday, a brief lull is expected as onshore flow develops as
the low makes landfall over the northern Gulf. Onshore flow will
keep light rain through the inner channels through Thursday. Winds
will be decreasing through the morning hours Thursday, down to
20-25 kts. By late Thursday night, another strong front arrives to
the outer coast and through the inner channels. Friday brings
another round of active weather as the front pushes through the
Panhandle bringing another round of moderate to heavy rain and
windy conditions. Strong winds (gusting to 40 mph or higher) are
likely for southern coastal areas.
.LONG TERM... Saturday the upper level trough and associated
surface low begin to weaken, allowing winds to diminish across the
region into Sunday. As this system slides south late-Sunday and a
ridge moves over the interior, we will begin to see northerly
winds develop in the inner channels but speeds look to remain
below advisory thresholds. Furthermore, widespread precip will
diminish in response to this ridge. Tuesday another surface low
will develop in the western Gulf bringing some enhanced winds.

.AVIATION...Storm force front moving inland Wednesday evening
then exiting to the east Thursday. Pre-frontal winds already in 20
to 30 kt range with gusts upwards of 45 kt along the coastal
areas. Winds and LLWS continue to increase then rapidly drop off
Thursday morning. So far rain rates and lower CIG were delayed but
expected to drop down to MVFR in the evening. Improving
conditions from N to SE in the morning. Onshore flow will keep
lower levels saturated keeping cloud decks near 3000k ft into
Thursday.

A strong low over the Gulf of Alaska is bringing a storm force front to the panhandle. Winds have increased along the outer coast and then inner channels with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph. Most places look to see their strongest winds during afternoon and into the overnight hours Wednesday into Thursday. Winds behind the front are expected to decrease after the front moves through but post frontal winds are expected to be 20 to 30 mph before further decreasing on Thursday. River rises are expected with this first system moving through as temperatures are expected to warm. Snow levels are also expected to rise with the warming temperatures so some snow melting will be likely during this event. River flooding is not expected at this time as rivers are running lower due to the colder temperatures allowing precipitation to fall as snow at elevation. After the storm exits the area on Thursday, we will see a brief break for Southeast Alaska before another system moves into the during the overnight hours Thursday night into the morning on Friday. Forecast guidance for this second system continues to show strong winds along the front moving across the panhandle through the day on Friday starting during the morning hours. Right now, winds are expected to be 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. This is an evolving and changing situation. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for updates at weather.gov/Juneau.

During a High Wind Event, the Yakutat ASOS recorded a peak wind gust of 61 mph at 629pm on November 8th.
During an ongoing high wind event, the Marine Exchange of Alaska station at Ward Cove measured a peak gust of 67 mph at 743 pm on November 8th. The Ketchikan airport ASOS measured a peak gust of 68 mph at 258 am on the 9th.
The Craig NWS weather station measured a peak gust of 60 mph at 1124pm on the 8th. On the opposite side of the island, a little over an hour later a wind gust of 63 mph was measured near Thorne Bay during frontal passage.
A maximum wind gust of 67 mph was recorded at Metlakatla seaplane base at 11:37 PM AKST November 8th, during an ongoing high wind event.
