(Rest of Today) Issued at 1112 AM CDT Sun Apr 30 2023 A cold core upper low centered in the vicinity of Lake Michigan this morning will drift slowly eastward over the course of the day, with west-northwesterly winds at the 500-mb level across the TN Valley expected to strengthen considerably, reaching speeds of 85-95 knots by 00Z. Latest CAMs suggest that the combination of rapid mid-level cooling and modest warming in the boundary layer will support the development of weak convection across the Lower OH Valley by 15-17Z, which should spread east-southeastward through the afternoon hours. Thus, we have included a slight chance POP for showers for locations generally north of the TN River in the 20-00Z timeframe, as some of this activity may reach our CWFA. If this scenario indeed materializes, rainfall amounts will be very low due to high cloud bases and dry air in the low- levels. Otherwise, we are still expecting very windy conditions this afternoon as a 5-6 mb pressure gradient between a ridge to our west and low to our east, coupled with a deep boundary layer extending up to 6-7 kft AGL will support efficient mixing of high momentum flow aloft. Conditions will be very close to Wind Advisory criteria for several hours this afternoon, with sustained northwest winds around 25 MPH and frequent gusts up to 35 MPH (higher in elevated terrain). A rather cool northwest flow regime will hold through the early to middle part of the week as the upper low remains parked over the Great Lakes region. This will keep temperatures a good 10-15 degrees below normal Monday through Wednesday. However, no precipitation is expected and sunny days and clear nights are expected. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday night through Saturday) Issued at 1254 AM CDT Sun Apr 30 2023 The upper low will finally pull further east over the northeast U.S. by Thursday as shortwave ridging develops across the southern Plains into the western Gulf of Mexico. An upper low/trough parked off the west Coast will pivot shortwaves east into the Plains through the ridge. One or more of these will spill east-southeast into the TN valley within the NW flow regime in this region. This along with warm/moist advection will produce one or more weak MCSs that generate over the Ozarks and lower MS Valley that will spread into the TN valley. At this point, instability is favoring more showers than thunderstorms for our area displaced from the more moist and unstable warm sector environment further southwest. Thus for now, have left thunderstorms out on Friday into Saturday as building high pressure over the Great Lakes produces northeast flow/drier air advection that may suppress low level inflow of this airmass into the region. && .AVIATION...
