.SYNOPSIS...

Cold air paired with strong wind gusts up to around 50 mph will
allow for blowing and drifting of our current snow pack lowering
visibility and creating hazardous driving for many areas into at
least Saturday morning. Additionally, lake effect snowfall will
continue downstream of Lake Michigan into Sunday. A warm up above
freezing occurs midweek next week.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

The upper level low's main vort max lobe moves away from the area
into this morning taking the main surface low pressure system into
southern Canada. Additionally, trajectories become more westerly
allowing for a transition into lake effect snow being the main snow
event. With it being so cold, the DGZ is basically into the ground
with lake enhanced omega residing above the DGZ. This factor of the
cross-hair method being slightly off as well as the strong winds
being able to rip apart the snow flakes should help provide a
ceiling to our lake effect snow amounts. Additional snowfall amounts
will be the greatest downstream of the lake reaching 8 to 12
additional inches of snow there from now through Saturday night.
Thereafter, the lake effect snowfall looks to be the main snowfall
event through at least much of Sunday. The snow paired with the
strong winds will help to lower visibility and so will hold onto the
blizzard warning for our lake effect area. One thing to watch for
today will be that additional counties could be added on the eastern
edge of the blizzard warning.
Another hazard today will be the strong gusty winds. Wind gusts will
likely be able to surpass 50 mph at their peak and that combined
with the powdery natured snow will allow for blowing and drifting of
snow as well as lowered visibility. This will impact the N-S roads
the most with drifting snow, but travel across all roads will need
to use caution where visibility does become lowered.
Temperatures this morning have dropped below zero away from the lake
influence. With the very strong winds expected to reach between 40
and 50 mph today, wind chills will be able to reach into the upper
20s and low 30s below zero. This is wind chill warning criteria.
This cold air is expected to hang around through the weekend and
into Tuesday, but there is a slow warming trend through that period.
With this multitude of hazards, have opted to keep the winter storm
warning hoisted despite the lack of falling snow so that all of the
hazards can be covered under one headline.
If that's not enough, have also kept PoPs across the area as
moistening in the 850 mb layer appears to be enough for a chance for
light snow showers this afternoon that could accumulate up to an
inch of additional snowfall away from lake enhanced snow showers.
The highest of this snowfall is expected to be west of IN-15.

Trajectories, then, turn southwest ahead of a clipper system diving
southeast across the Northern Plains. Have upped PoPs for this
system with the chance for light snow, but still want to allow for
the possibility of a shift in track with this system as does often
happen clippers.
High pressure follows the clipper system allowing for a dry period
through Wednesday. Wednesday, with warm air advection arriving, the
temperatures will be able to rise back above freezing to allow for
melting of snow. The next chance for rain arrives late week.

Radar imagery shows the heaviest precipitation has moved eastward
of our CWA, however, gusty winds, plummeting temperatures, light
snowfall and blowing snow for both terminals will continue this
period. VSBYs have been running from 1/4SM to about 2SM at KSBN
and at KFWA have ranged between 3/4SM and about 3SM. This looks to
continue but there may be temporarily VSBYs that fall below 1/4SM
at KSBN and between 1/4SM and 3/4SM with the blowing snow in the
gusty winds. Ground operations staff will be hampered with very
dangerous windchills through the TAF period.
