Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 231 PM PDT Tue Sep 6 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Hot and dry conditions continue through Wednesday evening, but a cold front moving through on Thursday will help to bring some relief to the recent hot temperatures. Expect some afternoon clouds over the next couple of days along with very isolated dry thunderstorms. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday evening The very strong ridge in place over the western and central U.S. will continue to bring record high temperatures today and tomorrow. Heat products remain in effect as highs reach into the lower to middle 100's in the hottest valleys. Lows will continue to be mainly in the mid 50's and 60's. There will be just enough moisture and instability for some build-ups this afternoon and evening as well as some very isolated dry thunderstorms, which could produce some gusty outflow winds. A bit of an increase in moisture will bring slightly more coverage of dry thunderstorms on Wednesday with the daytime heating, though will still remain isolated. It will be a little breezy in northern Nevada on Wednesday, especially in northern portions of Humboldt County. .LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday. The upper level ridge that has been sitting over the region the last couple weeks will begin to breakdown. A trough of low pressure will pass to the north, while remnants from Hurricane Kay will try and make its push northward from the Baja peninsula area on Thursday. With the trough passage to the north of the state, winds and RH will have to be monitored for fire weather conditions. Afternoon winds will be gusty across northern Nevada. Some cloud-buildups with a shower or two may also be possible further south, across Northeastern Nye and White Pine counties. Highs will still be above normal, topping out in the mid 80s to mid 90s, depending on location. Lows will generally be in the 50s and 60s, with some cooler 40s in sprinkled in across the northern tier of Elko county. By Friday the circulation from Hurricane Kay will likely be off the Baja coast. There will be some build-ups and showers around the Lincoln/White Pine county line as well as the Lincoln/N. Nye county line, however no showers or storms are currently expected further north Friday evening. Highs will be another 5 degrees cooler than Thursday, with highs generally in the 80s to near 90, with some areas reaching into the lower to mid 90s. Lows for Friday night will be in the 50s to 60s with cooler 40s across Elko county. A complex weather pattern looks to emerge Saturday through next Tuesday. Models are trying to handle timing, locations, and potential phasing of multiple areas of low pressure, including the future remnants of Hurricane Kay. The previous few days of runs have shown an upward trend in shower and thunderstorm coverage, however the most recent runs have backed off a bit. This will be another area to monitor. In general weekend showers and thunderstorms are possible across central Nevada. To start next week coverage may expand northward. Highs will be in the upper 80s to near 90s for the weekend, the mid 80s Monday, and the 70s and 80s Tuesday. Lows will range in the 50s and 60s. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected at all terminals through Wednesday evening. Some towering cumulus downdrafts could create some outflow wind gusts around KELY in the afternoon, but likely no greater then in the 15-25 kt range. && .FIRE WEATHER...Afternoon and early evening build-ups are expected in all zones today and Wednesday. There could be a few isolated dry thunderstorms today, mainly over higher elevations with outflow winds being the main threat. A bit of an increase in moisture will bring slightly more coverage of dry thunderstorms on Wednesday with the daytime heating, though they are still expected to be isolated. A boundary passing by to the north on Wednesday will bring some gusty westerly winds to FW Zones 437 and 438 during the afternoon. This will bring elevated Fire Weather conditions there, though critical conditions are expected to stay north of the zones, in southern Idaho. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Heat Advisory until 8 PM PDT Wednesday for Humboldt County- Northeastern Nye County-Northern Elko County-Northern Lander County and Northern Eureka County-Northwestern Nye County-South Central Elko County-Southern Lander County and Southern Eureka County-Southwest Elko County-White Pine County.
