Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 317 PM PDT Sun Jun 19 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Unseasonably strong trough leaves Nevada tonight. Freezing temperatures expected for the higher elevated valleys Monday morning. However another warming trend begins with summertime temperatures returning by Thursday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday morning. Unsettled weather continues through the evening with the cold upper trough overhead. Showers have developed over northeast Nevada and as far south as the US50 corridor. Convective potential is low with CAPE values below 250 J/kg suggesting isolated pulse storms. HREF suggest that a storm or two will form over the Owyhee desert and move across the Elko vicinity between 5 and 7 pm. A cluster of showers have formed over Owyhee desert that is associated with a vorticity center on troughs backside. After sunset, a few showers linger until midnight, followed by partial clearing. Air mass is sufficiently cool and dry for patchy frost/freeze areas but targeting populated areas (such as Ely, Eureka, and Lamoille). Depending on location/elevation, freeze warning/frost advisory will be issued for early Monday morning. Main trough shears toward the northern plains, but leaves behind a lagging circulation over northern California. Impactful weather will be minimal, but some cloud cover will still stream across northern Nevada that reduces solar insolation. Although Monday will be warmer, afternoon temperatures will be 10+ degrees below normal. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday. Weather is to be dry and fair Tuesday and Wednesday aside from afternoon breezes. Daytime high temperatures are to be in the mid 70s to mid 80s Tuesday, warming to low 80s to low 90s Wednesday. Overnight lows look to be upper 30s to upper 40s Tuesday night and mid 40s to mid 50s Wednesday night. Weather looks to remain generally fair thru the period, however there will be opportunity for isolated dry thunderstorms Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons and evenings as modest moisture moves into the Great Basin. Main concerns associated with any activity will be gusty outflows and the occasional lightning strike. Temperatures will remain warm with daytime highs in the mid 80s to mid 90s and overnight lows in the mid 40s to mid 50s. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours. Haze and occasional blowing dust are possible at KTPH with gustier NW winds, yet visibility will likely remain greater than 6SM. Additionally, scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue to be present across portions of the forecast region into the evening with a quick rain shower and/or gusty outflow possible at KEKO, KBAM, KWMC, and KELY. Winds and shower activity will trend lighter and come to an end respectively the first part of the night. Cooler conditions may also make icing possible in the clouds so be sure to check the Aviation Weather Center icing forecast. && .FIRE WEATHER... Fire weather conditions no longer near critical conditions. Cold trough aloft has increased humidity and less wind has reduced fire potential. In addition, there is some hit and miss showers that will provide light precipitation, including the Kinsley wildfire east of Lages Junction. Thursday and Friday, the combination of a weak trough over northern Nevada and combined with a weak monsoonal surge will yield isolated diurnally driven thunderstorms over central/eastern Nevada. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
