Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 215 PM PST Mon Jan 3 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Gusty condition across Northern Nevada today with showers expected to follow later tonight. Look for showers to linger just north of the I-80 corridor clear through the week as strong westerly flow brings in more moisture and warmer temperatures for the region. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. Winds have already begun to pick up in Humboldt county with ground sensors in the area recording gust upward of 50 mph this morning. Latest guidance still expects winds to reach much higher values as the day progresses thanks to combination of the low-level jet and frontal push still making their way into the region. Meanwhile, latest high resolution models are seeing a bit of a delay to the expected snow that is accompanying the system, with the initial push looking to settle closer to the night time hours. However, the concerns for blowing and drifting snow still exist thanks to preexisting snow pack on the ground. With a combination of these strong winds and blowing/drifting snow, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for Humboldt county until 4 am Wednesday. Another Winter Weather Advisory will look to be added at 4 pm this afternoon for Northern Elko county and the Ruby Mountains/East Humboldt Range as the gusty conditions spread further east. As we continue into the overnight hours look for the expected snow showers to intensify as the frontal boundary finally pushes further southeast into our region with potential for several inches seen in the high elevation of Northern Nevada. Chances of blowing and drifting snow increase in the overnight as strong winds and potential down sloping last well into Tuesday afternoon. For the valleys on Tuesday, weather begins to become a bit more complicated as model agreements sees afternoon temperatures rise into the 30s to 40s alongside higher snow levels. While amounts for the day continue to trend light, precipitation type could easily fluctuate over the day with rain looking to be the majority of precipitation for the valleys of Humboldt county. Meanwhile, the north isn’t the only place expected to feel this sudden rise in temperatures as model continue to push the erosion of the cold air dome over Nevada. South of the I-80 corridor, where conditions look to stay dry, afternoon settle closer to the high 30s to low 40s with overnights sitting in the teens and 20s. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday. Northwesterly flow continues on Wednesday with a mix of rain and snow to valley locations generally north of the Highway 50 corridor. Heavier showers are expected across mountains of Elko County where an additional 3-8 inches of snow is expected. Snow levels across northern NV on Wednesday (where the precipitation is expected) will be around 5000 feet in the morning, and rise to around 6000 feet by Wednesday afternoon. Some of the higher elevation valley locations in Elko County may see a half inch or so of new snow, otherwise not expecting snow accumulations on Wednesday in valley areas. Wednesday night through Thursday night jet energy will retreat farther to the north, which will keep central NV dry, and only leave slight chances of light rain or snow over northern NV. Temperatures are expected to rise back above normal, with highs generally in the 40-45 degree range, and overnight lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. Friday into Saturday another trough will drop in from the Pacific NW bringing some light rain and snow to valley locations (again generally north of the Highway 50 corridor). Highs on Friday are expected to remain above normal, with the cooler air dropping highs on Saturday back to near normal. At this time Sunday and Monday look dry with near to slightly below normal temperatures across the CWA. && .AVIATION...Gusty winds of 25 to 35kts are expected across most of northern and central NV the rest of today and through the overnight hours, ahead of an approaching storm system.
