It brought periods of snow showers, increased wind, travel difficulties, and much colder temperatures to|the region through Wednesday night. Snow Monday into Tuesday morning overperformed in some areas with several inches of new snow falling in bands over parts of the eastern Sierra, and western NV.

.SYNOPSIS...
Another winter storm will drop through the region tonight
bringing snow showers, travel difficulties, and much colder
temperatures to the region through Wednesday. Leave extra time for
the commute Tuesday morning with snow covered roads likely. A
gradual warming and drying trend is on tap for the end the week
into the start of next weekend.

.SHORT TERM...
The inside slider this morning certainly made its presence known! I
planned for a slow and snowy commute, and I'm glad that I had a bit
of extra time and coffee for the drive across town. We are looking
at another round of cold and snow this evening into Tuesday.
Highlights:
* Strong, gusty W-NW winds for Mono county with wind gusts up to 50-
60 mph through the evening. Travel will be dangerous for high
profile vehicles along US-395 in Mono County. See Wind Advisory
for details.
* Plan on another round of snow this evening into Tuesday for NE CA
and NW NV with travel headaches likely starting this evening and
persisting into Tuesday. Remember to take it slow in ice and snow.

Here are the ranges of snow totals up front, based on 25th-75th
percentile guidance. We could see extremes (on the high or low end)
considering the convective nature of the incoming system, but these
ranges should give everyone a pretty good idea of what to expect
this evening through Tuesday night.
Greater Reno/Quad Counties area: 1-4", up to 6" V.C.
Tahoe Basin Communities: 4-8"
Sierra Crest: 8-14"
Tahoe area, 3-8"
Alpine/Mono Mono Co Communities: 1-4"
Susanville/Portola/Doyle: 1-4", higher for terrain W of US-395
Lovelock/Fallon: 1-4"
Yerington/Hawthorne: Dusting up to 3"
WINDS: It is quite chilly and breezy behind the cold front from
early this morning. These winds will be sticking around through the
evening. Northwesterly winds today will shift to the west overnight,
with winds turning north behind the cold front on Tuesday. The
shifting winds will continue across the Sierra with the potential
for strong, gusty northeast winds to materialize along and west of
the crest for Tuesday night.
SNOW: While the system this morning produced a bit more than
forecast, the one for tonight into early Tuesday has been the one to
keep an eye on. Hence, the winter weather advisory. Probabilistic
snow guidance trend has been up over the past couple of days, with
the bottom range of possible amounts above the zero mark for many
locations. High resolution simulations continue to show
precipitation bands forming around 5-6 PM for NE CA, across the I80
corridor around 8-9 PM tonight and slowly migrating southward along
the Sierra overnight into Tuesday morning. Peak snowfall rates and
reduced visibility across Donner Pass will occur between 9 PM and
midnight tonight. After the main steady precipitation band passes
through early Tuesday, the snow will become more showery as the cold
low moves overhead. Snow showers are likely to continue Tuesday
afternoon, with lingering showers early Wednesday for areas south of
US-50.
COLD: Daytime highs on Tuesday and Wednesday will struggle to top
the 30s, with teens and 20s for the mountains. Overnight low
temperatures are forecast to be the coldest on Tuesday and Wednesday
nights, especially if Wednesday night skies clear out. Plan for
widespread teen and single digit lows, with below zero values in
those colder Sierra valleys. Any overenthusiastic spring bulbs that
sprung up over the past few weeks will be quite displeased or dead.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday onward...
As the long wave trough pattern ejects further east, high pressure
will nudge further east over the region with a northerly flow
that will continue to pull colder, dry continental air south over
the Sierra and western NV. This transient short-wave ridge will
quickly push southeast over the region but still bring fair skies
and a slight upwards lift in daytime temperatures. The passage
Friday of another slider-type cold front will give a brief shot of
cooler air to western NV but will track too far east to bring any
other notable impacts to the remainder of the region. Therefore,
daytime highs Wednesday will stay in the 30’s for most valley
areas with high teens and 20s for mountain locations. Highs will
bump only into the 40s for valley areas through Friday with a more
general warming trend starting next weekend.
Ensemble guidance is showing some faint signs for an increased
chance for more moisture making a return to the West Coast by
early March. Ensemble simulations are indicating an increased
cycle of moisture and a wetter pattern beginning to influence the
region during the end of the first week of March. Although these
signs are promising, uncertainty still clouds any definite
prediction over these longer time periods. Whether we enter March
as a Lion or a Lamb is still to be seen. My money is on the Lion!

* WINDS: Breezy northwest winds much of the day into the early
evening. The strongest winds will affect Mono County, with wind
gusts 35-45 kts possible at KMMH. Westerly winds will increase
tonight ahead of the next quick-moving wave, but will quickly
shift to the north during the day Tuesday. Increasing risk for
turbulence and wind shear concerns tonight into Tuesday. Gusty
northeast winds will develop across the Sierra Tuesday night into
Wednesday with choppy air conditions for areas along and west of
the Sierra.
* SNOW: The next quick-moving system will drop through the eastern
Sierra and western Nevada late this evening into Tuesday with
another round of snow for lower valley and Sierra terminals. Plan
on steady snow showers early Tuesday morning transitioning to more
showery conditions. Heavier snow bands could result in localized
higher accumulations, but generally we are forecasting 1-4" for
the lower valley terminals and 3-8" for the Sierra terminals.
* IMPROVING CONDITIONS: Snow showers may linger south of US-50 into
early Wednesday, with continued terrain obscuration. Clearing is
anticipated Wednesday night, with a 40% chance for fog in favored
Sierra valleys, including KTRK. High pressure returns with drier
and less windy conditions for the end of the week through the
weekend.
