.SYNOPSIS...Mostly cloudy today with above normal temperatures.
Expect windy conditions throughout Tuesday with a wind advisory
beginning at 4 AM and ending at 10 PM PST Tuesday evening for
Humboldt and Northern Elko counties. Periods of rain are expected
throughout the day changing to snow Tuesday night into early
Wednesday morning. This period of weather is the first of an
active period reaching into Sunday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday Night.

A period of active weather has begun. An atmospheric river has
been transporting moisture into the region producing periods of
rain throughout the CWA, above normal temperatures and gusty
winds heading into Tuesday evening. The most likely amount of
liquid equivalent for NW NV and SW central NV will be 0.15" to
0.25" with a few areas seeing a little higher and a little lower
depending on localized areas of precipitation shadowing. Expect
higher amounts of precipitation in west central NV with around
0.33" to 0.66". Elko and White Pine are expected to receive 0.5"
to 1" in the valleys and 1" to 2.5" for the mountains with higher
amounts favoring higher elevations. Precip type will be of the
liquid variety into Tuesday night where falling temperatures and
lower snow level elevations will change the precip to snow. Warm
southerly winds will keep temperatures above normal for Tuesday
with most areas being in the 40s to 50s. Without the warm
southerly winds Wednesday we will see cooler conditions with highs
falling into the 30s and 40s. While the snowfall will be limited
it can still cause icy roads and adverse travel conditions.
Likewise the winds will make for adverse travel conditions
especially so for high profile vehicles.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through Next Tuesday.

Active weather remains through the New Year and beyond. By early
Thursday morning the next of several systems to greet the state
will be producing snow showers across the area. Snow will be
light, but will persist through the day and night. Valleys may
see anywhere from a trace to 2 inches, with mountains likely
seeing in the neighborhood of 3-5 inches.

Thursday night, and Friday, snow levels rise above 7000 feet
south of I-80, and around 6300 feet near and north of I-80. This
will contribute to snow changing over to a rain/snow mix, and all
rain in some areas, from west to east. In general valleys can
expect to see another trace to 2 inches Friday, with mountains
seeing in the order of 1-2+ feet.

Snow levels begin to fall through Saturday. A rain/snow mix may
still remain for areas of Humboldt, Lander, and portions of
Eureka, and Nye counties. Current thinking are for snow levels to
remain low enough for mostly snow across Elko and White Pine
counties. With that thinking expected snowfall in valleys will
remain trace to 2 inches, with valleys across Elko and White Pine
seeing 2-5 inches, and mountains adding another 1-2+ feet.

Sunday, slightly cooler air moves in as the existing system begins
to take a dive south and east of the state. Light snow showers
will occur, with another 0-1 inch in valleys, and 6-12 inches in
mountains.

Storm totals for mountains from Thursday through Sunday will
generally range in the 1 to 3 foot range, with higher mountains
such as the Ruby Mountain/East Humboldt range seeing 3 to 5 plus
feet. With rainfall expected Tuesday night through Wednesday,
followed by ample snowfall Thursday through Sunday, there is a
heightened risk for avalanches to occur.

A brief reprieve in active weather Sunday afternoon and overnight
is short lived as the next system on deck looks to take a swing at
Nevada to start the next work week. Highs Thursday through Sunday
will generally be in the 30s and 40s, with cooler high
temperatures in the 20s and 30s working in by the start of next
week. Lows generally in the teens and 20s with single digits also
returning Monday.

&&

.AVIATION...An approaching weather system will bring deteriorating
flight conditions to much of the region today and tonight.
Southerly winds increase today with LLWS becoming an issue mainly
for KEKO between 17z and 22z. By late this afternoon and into this
evening snow or a rain snow mix will likely further lower VIS at
KELY and KEKO.
