Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 319 AM PST Wed Dec 21 2022 .SYNOPSIS...The southern edges of a weather system will push through northern Nevada today. Breezy to windy conditions along with light snow showers will accompany this feature. After the system passes, northwest flow will usher in cooler temperatures for tomorrow. Another weather system will bring snow showers to the area late Thursday and Friday. A period of active and potentially wetter weather will be possible early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday night. Isolated to scattered snow showers have developed across northern Nevada earlier in the night and is evident on radar. Limited accumulations are noted on Nevada Department of Transportation webcams and automated weather stations. Look for this activity to continue today with highest accumulations forecast for northern Elko county and the higher passes and summits on I-80. An inch or two is expected in northern Elko county with up to a half inch or so along the higher passes of I-80. Highs today will be in the 30s and 40s. Winds will be breezy to windy, especially in northeast Nevada, where gusts to 30 to 40 mph are possible in valley locations, though speeds of 40 to 50 mph are possible above 6500 feet. The strong wind will bring about patchy blowing snow especially in Elko and northern Lander/Eureka counties. Clearing will commence from west to east tonight. Northeast Nevada will be a bit on the chilly side with single digit lows, though other locations will see the teens and 20s. On Thursday all models are depicting shortwave ridging moving across the area but it will quickly give way to the next storm system moving into the area. Highs tomorrow will be below normal with readings in the 20s and 30s in the north with 30s and 40s in the central. Winds will be light. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Tuesday. Isolated to scattered snow showers continue Friday morning, mainly in northern Nevada and taper off in the afternoon. Warmer highs are expected in the 30's and 40's after a morning low in the teens and 20's, except for some single digit lows in Elko County. Ridging moves into the Great Basin for the Christmas weekend through Monday. However, there will be activity just to the north of the ridge, so there is always a chance that some moisture sneaks into northern Nevada and brings a few showers, especially near the Idaho border. A warming trend will bring above normal highs in the mid 30's through the mid 40's in Elko County, and the 40's through the mid 50's elsewhere. This will allow for some snow melt of the lower valleys and mid slope snow, though likely not too quickly as days are short and overnight lows are still for the most part expected to stay below freezing. On Monday night and Tuesday, Pacific moisture is expected to start streaming into the West via an Atmospheric River. Snow levels will be in the rise, bringing a rain/snow mix and eventually rain in valleys as this will be the start of a multi- day precipitation event. Stronger southerly winds are also a possibility. && .AVIATION...Any ongoing snow showers this morning will taper off early this afternoon with MVFR ceilings and visibility accompanied by any snow. Gusty winds to around 25 kts are expected at KEKO after 18Z today. VFR prevails at KTPH and KELY through the forecast period.
