Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 257 PM PDT Mon Apr 18 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Gusty southwesterly winds continue into this evening, which may result in hazy conditions. Rain and snow showers return to northern NV Tuesday morning, and expand into central NV by Tuesday afternoon. Dry and mild on Wednesday, with a cooler and wetter system moving into the region Thursday through Friday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night. Jet energy associated with a low currently just off the Pacific NW coast is pushing east into northern CA and southern OR this afternoon. This energy is all gradually drifting eastward, resulting in gusty southwesterly winds across much of northern and portions of central NV. Winds may approach advisory levels over western Humboldt County into the early evening hours. Blowing dust is possible the rest of this afternoon and early evening, mainly over the northern half of the CWA. Hazy conditions likely linger into the mid to late evening hours. Dry and mild tonight. Tuesday morning as the Pac NW low opens and all associated energy drifts east into the inter-mountain west, rain and snow showers will spread over portions of northern NV. Most valley locations will see a little light rain, though can't rule out brief snow shower in valleys around or above 6000 feet in elevation. Showers drift south and east through Tuesday afternoon, with most precipitation falling north of the Highway 50 corridor. Showers end by the late afternoon hours Tuesday in all areas except the mountains of northern Elko County, where a few light showers may linger through the late evening hours. Dry and mild across the CWA Tuesday night with the region between systems. .LONG TERM...Wednesday to next Tuesday Zonal wind flow will transition to a more southwest direction during the day Wednesday causing temperatures to rise into the mid 60s/low 70s across northern and central Nevada. Wind speeds will increase too with gusts ranging from the 25 to 30 mph. Another coastal low pressure system will reach California and bring precipitation to northern and central Nevada Thursday and Friday. QPF amounts continue to trend highest in northern and eastern Nevada during the event ranging from 0.10" in western portions of Humboldt county and northern Nye with QPF amounts ranging from 0.10" to 0.30" in the rest of northern and central Nevada. Confidence is moderate that the Ruby Mountains and some higher peaks in Elko county will reach 0.50". Therefore, confidence is moderate that this late week event will bring widespread precipitation. Some of this precipitation could be in the form of thunderstorms with the greatest chance currently in northern Nevada on Thursday afternoon. Windy conditions are likely Thursday and Friday with the greatest chance for the highest winds in central Nevada and on the mountains of northern Nevada. Lows will range from the mid to low 30s with high temperatures on both days ranging from the 50s and 60s; coolest on Friday. Lingering scattered afternoon and evening snow showers are likely under northwest winds in northern Elko county with highs in the 40s. However, dry conditions with highs in the 50s and low 60s are expected elsewhere Saturday and Sunday. A ridge will start to build into the area Monday bringing continued dry conditions and highs in the uppers 60s/lower 70s. && .AVIATION...Gusty southwesterly winds will continue across much of northern NV the rest of this afternoon. Blowing dust is possible into the early evening hours, with lighter winds and hazy conditions during the mid to late evening hours. KWMC and KBAM should have the strongest gusts today, and due to their proximity to dust sources, these sites also have the best chances for VIS reductions due to BLDU. KEKO should see hazy skies around or shortly after 00Z this afternoon. The next system to impact the region will bring a mix of rain and snow showers to KWMC and KBAM in the mid to late morning hours on Tuesday, with showers reaching KEKO closer to noon.
