Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 310 AM MDT Thu Sep 29 2022 .SHORT TERM (Today - Friday)... An upper low moving into the Pacific NW will be the main weather feature over the the short term period. We've seem some isolated showers, some of which have been a bit gusty, moving quickly across portions of the area overnight. The low will move into the panhandle later this afternoon and eventually sink into southeastern Idaho during the day Friday. This will bring a noticeable pattern change to the region with precip chances, breezy conditions today and much cooler weather today but especially into Friday. Winds today appear to be just below any Lake Wind/Wind Advisory levels but wouldn't be surprised to see a few spots across the INL flirt with advisory level winds. These gusty winds could create some isolated areas of blowing dust between American Falls and Pocatello and up near Roberts if fields in these areas have already been plowed. Hi-res CAMs support tstm potential especially across the high country the next few days as a few rounds of precip move cyclonically through the area as the low moves overhead Friday. This is when temperatures will be much cooler with highs only expected in the 50s and 60s across eastern Idaho. This will certainly feel more fall-like than what we've seen the past few days. McKaughan .LONG TERM (Saturday through next Thursday)... Once we reach Saturday, the upper low will generally be centered over eastern Idaho before shifting into Montana on Sunday. High temperatures on Saturday will be similar to the highs for Friday, with just a few degree increase in most locations. The greatest potential for wetting rains will still be across the eastern highlands for the weekend. Although we are not currently expecting much at all in the way of accumulating precipitation further west, snow levels will support potential snowfall along the ridgelines of the Central Mountains, where very localized areas could see a dusting of snow Saturday and Sunday mornings. As the trough moves through the central Plains early next week, ridging will begin to build over Idaho again through the end of the extended period. This will mean mostly clear skies across the entire CWA and a gradual warming trend. High temperatures will increase by a few degrees each day through Tuesday, at which time temperatures look to stabilize through Thursday. Cropp && .AVIATION... Winds will increase early this afternoon as an upper trough moves through Idaho. Sustained winds of 10-20 kts with gusts 20-30 kts are likely at all terminals except for KDIJ. Winds will lighten shortly after sunset. The greatest chances for showers and thunderstorms will be along our borders with Montana and Wyoming each day through Sunday. Upper-level cloud cover will increase throughout the day today, with mid-level clouds lingering overnight at KDIJ and clearing elsewhere tonight. Cropp && .FIRE WEATHER... An upper low moving into the Pacific NW will gradually move into the panhandle later today before settling over eastern Idaho during the day tomorrow. This will result in increasing chances of showers, maybe a few thunderstorms, mainly across the high country, as the low settles over the region. Breezy winds today will gradually subside as we move into Friday but temperatures will be noticeably cooler Friday and gradually start to warm a few degrees each day into next week.
