.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moving inland later this evening and overnight will
favor strong and gusty west winds over the mountains and deserts,
along with cooler conditions west of the mountains on Wednesday.
Thursday then kicks off a significant warming trend which will
last into early next week. Saturday will be the warmest day west
of the mountains, with Sunday being the hottest day for the
deserts. High temperatures on both days will top out anywhere from
10 to 20 degrees above seasonal average.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

A 500mb trough and associated surface low will move farther
inland across central California and into the Great Basin through
this afternoon and evening. Today’s highs will top out a few
degrees warmer than yesterday before a brief cooling trend sets in
with the passage of our 500mb trough. Westerly winds will also
increase through this evening and overnight as the surface
pressure gradient strengthens with the trough and surface low
passage. Peak wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph can be expected over the
San Diego County Deserts and over mountain passes, thus a Wind
Advisory has been issued from 5 PM today to 11 AM Wednesday.
Thursday then kicks off a significant warming trend as upper
level ridging builds in.

The trend of warming temperatures continues through the weekend
as the upper ridge gradually strengthens over the Southwestern
United States. Triple digit heat will make its return to the
Coachella Valley and San Diego County Deserts on Friday, while the
coastal valleys and Inland Empire will reach the middle 80s to
lower 90s. Saturday will likely be the warmest day across most
areas west of the mountains, with high temperatures topping out
anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees above seasonal normals across much
of the inland valleys. There is a considerable amount of
uncertainty regarding high temperatures in coastal areas on Friday
and Saturday given the extended period of onshore flow each day.
Current EPS/GEFS guidance for Fri-Sat high temps ranges from the
lower 70s to middle 80s across coastal San Diego County, with the
EPS even suggesting some coastal locations reaching the 90s on
Saturday. The 90-degree mark will likely be very tough to reach
at the coast (to put things lightly) given the prolonged onshore
flow that looks to be in place, but this lends to illustrate some
of the uncertainty surrounding this weekend’s heat. Stay tuned
as these details become more clear over time.

Confidence remains relatively high in the Coachella Valley and
San Diego County Deserts experiencing the brunt of this
weekend’s heat, especially as the ridge shifts eastward. Highs
on Saturday look to top out between 102 and 106 degrees, which
translates to about 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal average.
Sunday will be the hottest day in the deserts, with some localized
areas potentially approaching the 110 degree mark. This heat and
any heat safety concerns will be exacerbated by low temperatures
only falling into the middle and upper 70s both Sunday and Monday
morning. Most areas west of the mountains will actually experience
slightly cooler temperatures on Sunday due to the upper ridge
shifting east. True “relief” from the heat, however, will not
likely set in until early next week as another trough approaches
the western United States. With this in mind, temperatures are
still expected to remain several degrees above normal early next
week.
