.SYNOPSIS...
Blocking high pressure will likely maintain dry conditions
through the end of January. Periods of east to northeast winds in
the Sierra will impact recreation the rest of today and possibly
again Thursday into Friday morning. A weather system may reach the
Pacific Coast late Sunday into Monday with potential for very minor
rain and snow totals in the Sierra and northeast California.

.DISCUSSION...
Evolution of the large scale pattern remains consistent in
the ensemble simulations. Blocking ridge along the west coast
will dissipate over the weekend as a new ridge builds over the
central Pacific near 140w. This does open the door for colder
systems to drop into the west from Alaska/western Canada, but
moisture signals for a precipitation event remain almost non-
existent. Probability for a completely dry January at the Reno
Airport is up to 90%.
The rest of this week: East winds in the Sierra will drop off
tonight, but may occur rather slowly along the Crest, where gusts
up to 50 may linger into early Wednesday AM. Simulations over the
last 24 hours are favoring another dry system to drop south into
the Great Basin Thursday-Friday leading to an additional period of
east to northeast winds over the Sierra impacting recreation in
the higher terrain. Valley inversions will allow particulate
builds ups near population centers, but there may be enough
wind/mixing to clear out valleys each afternoon.
Storm Potential: Ensembles continue to lean drier for the Sunday
night into Monday system. Probabilities are down to 10-20% for
measurable precipitation in the Sierra and northeast California.
High end totals (10% chance of exceeding) are down to 0.25-0.35
inch near the Sierra Crest into western Lassen County. Brong

Aside from areas of late night and morning shallow valley fog in
the Sierra, especially near KTRK, VFR conditions continue into
the weekend.
Northeast to east winds over the Sierra will bring bumpy
arrivals/departures for TVL and TRK the rest of today and possibly
