Interior northern California is still experiencing widespread drought with little change to the ongoing drought conditions as of the end of February. Many local and regional, as well as state-wide restrictions continue. The state-wide drought declaration by governor Gavin Newsom also continues. Mandatory water restrictions are in place on outdoor water use for all Californians with possible fines to violators. February was a very dry month with some areas in Northern California receiving little to no precipitation.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 202 PM PST Mon Jan 31 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Dry and mild weather continues. Gusty north to east winds return Tuesday and Wednesday. Lighter winds and above average temperatures late week. && .DISCUSSION... Some high clouds are lingering across the southern portion of the CWA early this afternoon as a closed low remains offshore. Otherwise, another day of mild and dry weather continues with highs remaining slightly above normal for late January. Some light north winds are also noted across the area. A shortwave to the north of the area will usher some additional high cloud cover to the area this afternoon through the overnight hours and bring similar low temperatures tonight as those last night. The main weather story will be a deepening trough that develops to our east tonight that will lead to gusty winds across much of the area. This will first bring a tightening of the northerly pressure gradient, then later on Tuesday to the eastern gradient. Northerly wind gusts will begin to develop overnight, becoming strongest by late Tuesday morning with gusty conditions continuing into Wednesday. The breeziest winds will be in the western half of the Valley, extending into the foothills of the Coast Range. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for these locations as gusts from 35-45 mph are expected through Wednesday evening. Over the northern Sierra, northeasterly winds increase tonight, but become strongest again Tuesday evening into Wednesday. Expect gusts to range from 30- 50 mph over the mountains, with locally stronger gusts over peaks and wind prone areas. A Wind Advisory has been issued over portions of the Sierra Nevada as well to account for these conditions from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening. This deep trough moves east later on Wednesday with decreasing winds expected Wednesday night into Thursday. Ridging returns over the area late week bringing lighter winds and back to above normal highs. && .EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday)... Upper level high pressure remains over NorCal Friday as a short wave trough moves over the PacNW. This wave digs into the Great basin over the weekend and may bring some locally gusty north to east wind back to the area. Otherwise, above normal highs and dry weather continues with patchy morning frost possible in colder areas of the Central Valley. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions expected next 24 hrs. North winds increase in the Sacramento Valley after around 6 UTC with gusts up to 35 kts through the day Tuesday. && .STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
