Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 220 AM MST Wed Nov 9 2022 .SYNOPSIS...A Pacific storm system has begun to impact northern Arizona with gusty southwest winds, and will be followed by colder temperatures and areas of rain and snow this afternoon. Continued cool, but dry weather, is then expected Thursday and Friday, with warmer and dry conditions over the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...The wind has been howling this early AM across northern Arizona. Wind gusts along the Kaibab Plateau have already reached 50 mph and areas around Flagstaff have seen wind gusts upwards of 35 mph. The stronger winds in the northwestern portion of our CWA will migrate eastward throughout the rest of today. Strong winds are not the only impact we are expecting from this storm system. Light showers have already begun along our western CWA border and these will continue to move toward the east as the day progresses. Rain showers will turn to snow showers for many areas above 6000 feet, as the snow levels drop with the progression of the cold front. The NBM favored higher QPF values from what the previous forecast package had, but with the fast pace of this system, we followed our original QPF heavily with only a hint of the NBM forecast. As snow begins to settle across the high country, visibility may become poor due to blowing snow potential as the strong winds will persist through the day. After the breezy conditions and precipitation chances pass, overnight temperatures will drop significantly. Thursday morning lows will be below freezing for most of central and northern Arizona, and we'll see this cool morning pattern continue into the weekend. This storm system is expected to make a quick exit by the early morning hours on Thursday. Any lingering breezes and showers will likely be isolated along our eastern border. Proceeding this system, drier conditions and a slow warming trend will be present for the extended period. There could be a brief shortwave trough swing through our state toward the end of the weekend, but impacts are currently expected to be minimal. && .AVIATION...For the 12Z TAF package...Rain along and west of a KPRC- KFLG-KPGA line this morning will become widespread after 18Z. Periods of scattered MVFR and isolated IFR are likely. Potential LIFR when rain changes over to snow in the early afternoon for higher terrain. Gusty southwest winds 15-25 kts with gusts of 30-45 kts will lessen in the afternoon after frontal passage. Expect precipitation to end and light winds after 03Z. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments. && .FIRE WEATHER...Expect strong southwest winds today with gusts between 30-55 mph. Rain will begin early before changing over to snow by the afternoon for areas along and north of I-40. Winds decrease tonight as precipitation comes to an end. Very cold temperatures for Thursday with light northerly winds. Friday through Sunday...Very cold temperatures on Friday with light northeast winds. The Four Springs RAWS reported a 63 MPH wind gust at 319 AM and a wind gust of 62 MPH at 419 AM 6560 feet elevation.
A winds sensor at Snowbowl (9969 feet elevation) measured wind gust of 58 MPH or higher between 600 AM and 835 AM. The peak wind gust of 64 MPH was measured at 710 AM.
The winds sensor on Greens Peak (at 10118 feet) had peak wind gusts of 58 MPH or higher from 855 AM to 355 PM. The peak wind gust of 65 MPH was measured from 221 to 227 PM. The highway wind sensor on Highway 260 at mile post 378 measured a peak wind gust of 67 MPH at 1013 AM. The gusts were 58 MPH or higher from 723 AM to 305 PM. The Show Low Airport reported high winds from 915 AM to 320 PM. The peak wind gust of 68 MPH was at 155 PM. Broken tree branches (one inch diameter) and shingle damage was reported in Show Low at 1143 AM.
A wind sensor at Two Guns reported wind gusts of 58 MPH or higher from 820 AM to 1155 AM. The peak wind gust of 68 MPH was at 1033 AM.
The wind sensor at Limestone Canyon measured wind gust over 58 MPH at 924 and 1024 AM. The wind sensor at the junction of Highways 277 and 377 measured wind gust of 58 MPH or higher between 933 AM and 133 PM. The peak wind gust was 62 MPH at 1223 PM. The Mogollon Airpark reported wind gusts of 58 MPH or higher between 955 AM and 115 PM. The peak wind gust was 63 MPH at 1215 PM.
The Taylor Airport measured wind gust of 58 MPH or higher from 1210 to 320 PM. The peak gust was 63 MPH at 155 PM.
The Window Rock Airport reported wind gusts over 58 MPH at 150 and 153 PM.
