Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 151 PM MST Tue Apr 5 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Gusty westerly winds will continue through this afternoon, especially north of the Mogollon Rim. Cooler temperatures and lighter northerly winds are forecast for tomorrow. Beginning Thursday, high pressure will bring a warming trend, with temperatures peaking on Saturday. A return of cooler weather, stronger winds, and perhaps chances for rain and snow are possible by early next week. && .DISCUSSION...So far today, gusty winds have occurred across the majority of northern Arizona. The strongest winds have been observed within the Little Colorado River Valley, including in the vicinity of Interstate 40 from Two Guns eastward to the New Mexico Border. In this area, we've seen frequent wind gusts in excess of 40 mph, therefore a Wind Advisory remains in effect across northeastern Arizona through 7 PM MST this evening. Cooler temperatures are forecast for tomorrow, but high pressure will bring a warming trend through the remainder of the week. The warmest weather will likely occur on Saturday, with daytime high temperatures around 10-15 degrees above average. In addition, less wind is forecast. On Sunday, ensemble forecasts suggests that an upper-level longwave trough will develop over the western United States. This pattern change will result in an extended period of cooler weather, gustier winds, and perhaps chances for rain and snow by early next week. Confidence that this pattern change will occur is high, but the exact timing and magnitude of said pattern change remains uncertain at this time. && .AVIATION...For the 00Z package...Expect VFR conditions for the next 24 hours. Strong westerly winds will continue through roughly 07Z Wednesday, before decreasing overnight. Lighter northerly winds will develop after 16Z, with peak wind gusts expected to remain below 25 knots.
