.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low moving over the Alaska Range towards the Yukon
Territories this morning will continue precipitation across much
of the Central and Eastern Interior through Monday evening. Winds
will continue to decrease in the Eastern Alaska Range through the
morning as strong high pressure builds over the Interior Tuesday
morning from the southwest. A shortwave in the far northwest
Arctic will push strong southwest winds to the Chukchi Coast with
a second strong push of winds expected Tuesday evening.
Temperatures increase out west as warm air moves in from the
southwest.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft...Weak shortwaves are moving east aloft located over the
Yukon Territories and across the Western Interior to the Brooks
Range. Ridging is building along the West Coast that will sweep
out the weakening shortwaves eastward in the Interior by Tuesday
evening. This will merge with a larger high pressure system in the
southeast that will extend ridging across mainland Alaska. This
will hold in place through Wednesday afternoon while a low in
Eastern Russian sends troughs over top the northwest and western
portion of the ridge.
Surface...A low east of the Alcan border is keeping snow and mixed
precipitation south of the Middle Tanana Valley through this evening.
A shortwave in the northwest tightens the gradient along the
Western Brooks Range and Chukchi Coast Monday evening as ridging
builds against the shortwave. High pressure in the southeast will
clear out conditions Monday evening with a weak low spinning up in
the Yukon Flats that will keep lingering snowfall from Arctic
Village to Healy but quickly dissipate by Tuesday morning. By
Wednesday, ridging holds in place in the Interior with a 997 low
in the northwest Arctic. Models are in better agreement
North Slope and Brooks Range...
Snow remains from Deadhorse east through this afternoon but
accumulations will only be 1 to 3 inches. Strong winds move
towards the Chukchi Sea Coast late this morning, gusting 30 to 45
mph as a shortwave tightens the gradient for the northwest coast.
Winds will see a brief drop in winds Tuesday morning before
another surge of stronger winds moves in from the southwest,
gusting 40 to 55 mph through Wednesday morning, with winds up to
80 mph from Point Hope to Cape Lisburne and offshore in the
northwest. Snow will be primarily contained to the Western Brooks
Range to Point Hope under 3 inches with under an inch across the
remaining of the Chukchi. Winds will be lighter Utqiagvik east but
could see periods 30 mph wind gusts through Wednesday night.
Temperatures will see a brief cooling across the Brooks Range
tonight before warm air spreads across the North Slope and Brooks
Range through midweek.
Central and Eastern Interior...
A system exiting to the Yukon Territories is providing mixed
precipitation from Fort Yukon south through the early morning to
light snow throughout the day to areas south of the Brooks Range.
Winds in the Eastern Alaska Range will taper off this afternoon as
high pressure begins to move in from the southeast. Strong ridging
in place by Tuesday morning will suppress active weather for much
of the Interior through the early parts of the week. High
temperatures will be in the single digit to double digits with a
warm-up expected for the weekend. Conditions will gusts to 25 mph
in higher elevations in the Interior Tuesday evening to early
morning Wednesday.
Western Interior and West Coast...
Ridging is building from the southwest and over the Western
Interior by this evening. This will remain in place through
Wednesday morning that will quiet most precipitation. Winds will
be the biggest player within the short term. A low Eastern Russia
will send shortwaves over the top of the ridge over mainland
Alaska. This will tighten the gradient along the West Coast, so
winds will pick up in Kotzebue Sound this evening and from St.
Lawrence Island to Point Hope by Tuesday morning. Winds in
Kotzebue Sound will be 25 to 35 mph this evening. By Tuesday
morning, elevated winds have moved over the West Coast, gusting to
40 mph and up to 60 mph at capes of the West Coast. Tuesday
evening winds peak off the the coast of Point Hope to 75 mph and
then winds begin to slowly taper off. Wind gusts stay above 30 mph
through Thursday along the coast and portions of the Northern
Seward Peninsula. As the ridge builds from the southwest,
temperatures jump to low 30s along the coast and low 20s in the
Western Interior.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Elevated water levels from
the Yukon Delta north to Utqiagvik Tuesday through Wednesday with
potential flooding from the Bering Strait north to Utqiagvik.
Elevated water to high surf possible for the Norton Sound on
Tuesday.
Extended Days 4 to 7...
Long-range models have good agreement of strong high pressure
remaining over the Central and Eastern Interior through the
remainder of the week. This begins to break down as models hint at
an approaching low from the Bering Sea sometime around Saturday,
but the placement, timing, and strength of this low is in large
disagreement between models.

The PAIW ASOS measured a gust of 73 MPH and sites in the area measured from 60 to 75 MPH.
High winds developed on the 14th and continued into the evening of the 17th. The Cape Lisburne AWOS reported a peak gust of 96 mph at 1:55 PM on the 16. Winds on the 15th and 16 at Cape Lisburne were frequently over 80 mph. The village of Point Lay saw gusts as high as 50 mph on the 16th.
Strong winds developed the evening of the 15th and continued into early in the day on the 17th. The National Ocean Service gauge at the Red Dog Dock reported a gust of 72 mph the evening of the 16th. The AWOS at the Point Hope airport reported a gusts as high as 59 mph.
