.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure is forecast to move from the Great Lakes this evening
to the Canadian Maritimes on Tuesday. This will drag a weak cold
front across the region on Tuesday morning. Several upper level
disturbances will then cross overhead through Thursday. Brief high
pressure is expected to follow for Friday. Low pressure approaching
from the west and southwest should then impact our weather over the
New Year's weekend and into next Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Additional light rain and (freezing rain across the Poconos) has
worked back into the region this evening, mostly confined to
areas north of I-76. Expect periods of rain and drizzle through
the rest of the evening. Temperatures will hold steady in the
low to mid 30s over much of the area. Overall, no major changes
were made to the forecast.
A first batch of precipitation passed across southeastern
Pennsylvania, eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey
around midday. While temperatures were a bit above freezing at the
surface in those areas, the dew point readings were in the 20s. When
the precipitation rates increased, the column cooled resulting in
some wet snow with a light accumulation in spots.
Precipitation rates decreased during the early to mid afternoon,
leaving only spotty light rain in the southern part of our area, and
some light snow showers in the north.
Another shot of light precipitation should pass mainly across
eastern Pennsylvania, and northern and central New Jersey this
evening through about midnight. The potential for snow and sleet
will end as warming aloft continues. However, some freezing rain
will likely occur in the Poconos, and in parts of Northampton
County, as well as in areas of far northern New Jersey. We have
reconfigured the Winter Weather Advisory a bit. Berks County and
Lehigh County are no longer in the advisory based on their current
and forecast temperature trends. We have expanded the advisory into
Morris County to cover the potential for some icing in its
northwestern townships.
The precipitation should move away to our east and northeast after
midnight. Clouds and areas of drizzle may linger for a few hours,
with some freezing drizzle possible in the Poconos and in far
northern New Jersey. Rapid drying from the northwest is anticipated
toward daybreak.
The shot of dry air from the northwest will result in a continued
break in the potential for precipitation from Tuesday morning into
early Tuesday afternoon with just some high clouds overhead. We are
then anticipating increasing and lowering cloud cover on Tuesday
afternoon. Some light precipitation (mainly rain) is forecast to
spread into our northwestern counties from the west late in the day
ahead of our next weather system.
Lows tonight should range from the upper 20s in the north to the
lower 40s in the south. Highs on Tuesday are forecast to be in the
40s in the north and in the 50s in the south.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
After a mostly dry Tuesday, precipitation chances once again
increase late in the day into Wednesday as pockets of PV head
northeast and then east around the top of the ridge over
southern FL. As this occurs, widespread light precipitation will
overspread the area Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
Temperatures Tuesday night again look relatively mild with only
marginal freezing conditions forecast across the Poconos.
Thermal profiles Wednesday morning do show the potential for a
wintry mix with all precipitation types in play for the Poconos
and northwest New Jersey. From about the Lehigh Valley and
points to the south and east, plain rain is expected.
During the day Wednesday, the PV will start to get sheared apart and
forcing for ascent looks pretty weak. As a result, the likely PoPs
on Tuesday night will drop to chance. Although Wednesday's
temperatures look to be above normal, widespread low clouds and fog
are possible.
For Wednesday night, weak low pressure will eject out of the
Tennessee Valley and head toward the Mid-Atlantic. As a result,
widespread precipitation will likely spread across the region. Just
plain rain is expected as temperatures will likely be in the upper
30s to lower 40s. Small precipitation will remain in play Thursday
and Thursday night. P-type should mainly be rain except across the
Poconos on Thursday night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Surface high pressure will build across the area on Friday providing
the region with a brief break in precipitation. By late Friday, a
potent upper level trough will begin to amplify across the Southern
Rockies as surface low pressure develops across the plains. The
surface low and trough are forecast to head east across the United
States. Precipitation is forecast to move back into the region
early on Saturday. Model guidance remains inconsistent on the
exact track of this wave thanks to the various perturbations in
the upper level flow. At the moment, any wintry mix is confined
to the Poconos and northwest New Jersey at the onset. Plain rain
is expected later on Saturday and into Saturday night. As the
system departs, more of the region could see some frozen
precipitation on Sunday. Monday looks dry at this time and could
be the beginning of a stretch of some normal or below normal
temperatures.

Tonight...VFR/MVFR ceilings lowering to IFR/LIFR. Areas of light
rain/fog will lower the visibility to MVFR/IFR at times. The
conditions then improve to VFR toward 12z. East-northeast to east-
southeast winds around 5 knots becoming variable. Low confidence
regarding the arrival time of the MVFR/IFR conditions.
