An unseasonably strong weather system affected the mid-Atlantic on April 30, 2021. A cold front moved through the region in the predawn hours of April 30, associated with low pressure moving into coastal New England. An upper level disturbance and a secondary cold front then approached late in the day on the 30th. This system interacted with the departing low pressure over New England, causing that low to rapidly intensify as it began moving towards the Canadian maritimes. With high pressure over the Midwest, this led to a very strong pressure gradient over the mid-Atlantic. Combined with strong dynamics associated with the secondary cold front, a lengthy period of windy conditions developed for much of the day on the 30th. Widespread wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph, with some gusts of 60 to 65 mph, occurred. This, combined with many trees across the region already bearing leaves, led to numerous instances of tree damage and power outages across the region. Scattered showers associated with the secondary front also helped to locally enhance wind damage. Winds finally began to decrease by the night of the 30th as the gradient gradually weakened.

.SYNOPSIS...
Rapidly deepening low pressure located off the New England
coast early this morning will make its way across Atlantic
Canada today and Saturday. Meanwhile, high pressure is forecast
to slide from the upper Mississippi River Valley to the
southeastern states. A frontal boundary is expected to drop into
Pennsylvania and New Jersey from the north on Sunday. The
boundary is then anticipated to meander in our region until a
wave of low pressure pulls it to our east and south on
Wednesday. A cold front may approach from the northwest on
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
...An unseasonably strong synoptic system with the potential
for significant impacts from high winds is expected to impact
the region through early Saturday morning...
1000 am update: Forecast is in good shape currently. No changes
made for the morning update.
The main mid-level trough axis will move offshore through
daybreak. The mean flow then becomes west to northwesterly
throughout the day as a jet maxima approaches from the Great
Lakes region. An associated strong vorticity lobe maxima will
dive rapidly southeastward directly toward the forecast area
during the afternoon and into the evening hours. Resulting 500
mb height falls will be on the order of an impressive 12 dam in
just 6 hours. Steepening lapse rates will result in combination
with a surge of low-level cold air advection.
At the surface, a rapidly intensifying surface low (<980 mb)
associated with the main trough axis is then forecast to pass
from the Gulf of Maine this morning into the Canadian Maritimes
by early Saturday. The strong cold front associated with this
low is currently making its way toward the coast and will be
offshore by daybreak. The surface pressure gradient will
continue tightening throughout the day as high pressure builds
to our west and south, especially into the afternoon and evening
as the incoming vorticity lobe and jet maxima result in rapid
mid-level height falls and diffluence aloft.
Breezy westerly winds around 15-20 mph with gusts up to around
30 mph can be expected wake of the cold front through mid-
morning. Temperatures should rise a good bit during the daytime
hours owing to downsloping and delay in the strong cold
advection until later in the afternoon and evening. Expect highs
mostly in the mid to upper 60s with some highs around 70
degrees across southern New Jersey and Delmarva. Dewpoints will
also fall rapidly into the 30s then 20s overnight. The
steepening lapse rates into the afternoon along the reinforcing
front may result in some scattered showers developing across the
area along with some stratocumulus cloud decks (especially
north/west of I-95), but drier air will be filtering in at the
same time so this should favor a mostly dry forecast. I have
gone with primarily unmentionable PoP, but can't completely rule
out a rogue shower this afternoon.
West to northwesterly winds will increase substantially as the
day progresses, especially into the evening hours, as the
aforementioned mid-level height falls and cold advection will
support efficient mixing to the 850-900 mb levels through at
least the early evening. Additionally, the vorticity maxima will
cause tropopause folding down to around the 500 mb level, which
is often indicative of very steep lapse rates. BUFKIT profiles
even indicate some super- adiabatic lapse rates into the
afternoon as the vort max enters the area with diurnal heating
still in place. These factors are expected to preclude any
question regarding the unfavorable timing of maximum wind fields
during the evening hours (less of the typical diurnal mixing).
Guidance is still very consistently indicating winds speeds in
the 850-900 mb levels increasing to 40-50+ kts, which are likely
to mix to the ground in the form of frequent wind gusts. Expect
sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph by the
early afternoon hours, with gusts increasing to the 45-55+ mph
range during the evening hours. Sustained winds are forecast to
peak in the 30-35 mph range near the coasts and in the higher
terrain north and west.
The High Wind Warning will continue as previously issued last
evening for this afternoon through early Saturday morning given
the potential for wind gusts of 55-60 mph for a few hours,
mainly during the evening (7 PM through 2 AM). Additionally,
potential exists for greater impacts than a typical solid Wind
Advisory event owing to the green up and foliage on most trees
in the area, even if widespread measured gusts of 60 mph do not
occur. Falling trees or tree limbs may bring down power lines,
potentially resulting in scattered power outages. This will be a
very long duration (~12 hr) high wind event, with potentially
significant impacts to the area.
The high winds are forecast to diminish fairly quickly during
the pre-dawn hours as the pressure gradient and forcing for
efficient mixing wane. Expect low temperatures in the 40s (30s
in the far north) Friday night amid the high winds.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The mid level long wave trough that is forecast to affect
eastern Canada and the northeastern states over the weekend
should begin to progress eastward, allowing for some ridging
over our region on Sunday night.
A northwest wind around 15 MPH with gusts near 25 MPH is
expected for Saturday with high temperatures mostly in the 60s.
The northwest flow is anticipated to weaken late in the day and
it should back to the southwest in the evening. While the day
will feature a good deal of sunshine, we are forecasting an
increase in clouds late in the day as warm advection begins
aloft.
A frontal boundary is expected to approach from the north on
Saturday night. It should drop into Pennsylvania and New Jersey
on Sunday and it will likely remain in our region on Sunday
night. While an overall increase in cloud cover is forecast
during the period, not much precipitation is anticipated. There
is a low or slight chance of showers in the Poconos, the Lehigh
Valley and northern New Jersey, mainly on Saturday night.
Warm temperatures will likely return for Sunday, even with the
frontal boundary in our area. A southwest to west wind should
increase to 10 to 15 MPH with afternoon highs rising mostly into
the upper 70s and lower 80s. Maximum readings are expected to
be around 70 in the elevated terrain up north and along the
immediate coast.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The period from Monday through Wednesday night should be rather
unsettled weather-wise. The frontal boundary will likely remain
in or near our region through the period. A short wave trough
traveling in the west to southwest mid level flow should pass
overhead on Monday night, bringing an increasing chance of
showers from Monday afternoon into Monday evening.
Rising humidity levels on Tuesday may result in the development
of scattered afternoon and early evening showers and
thunderstorms. Marginal instability is anticipated at that time.
A more substantial mid level short wave is forecast to pass
over our region around Wednesday night. A developing surface low
associated with the feature should finally drag the meandering
frontal boundary to our east and south at that time. It appears
as though showers are likely with a chance of thunderstorms on
Wednesday as the feature approaches from the west.
A northwest to north flow in the wake of the surface low should
draw dry air into our region on Thursday.
Temperatures are forecast to remain around 10 degrees above
normal for Monday and Tuesday, with readings falling back to
around normal on Wednesday and Thursday.

Expect advisory level conditions with westerly winds 15-20 kts
with gusts of 25-30 kts and seas 3 to 6 ft through around
daybreak. The winds will increase to 20-30 kts with gale force
gusts of 35-40 kts by late morning into the afternoon with seas
around 4-6 feet. Expect a few hours of sustained winds 25-35 kts
with peak gusts of 45-50 kts during the evening and early
overnight hours along with seas of 4-7 feet. The winds will
diminish substantially during the pre-dawn hours with some
lingering gale force gusts possible through daybreak, then Small
Craft Advisory conditions with gusts around 25 kts and seas 3-5
feet are likely to linger through the remainder of Saturday
morning.
The Gale Warning remains in effect through today, then a Storm
Warning remains in effect for tonight given the increased
potential and confidence for a few hours of storm force wind
gusts.
Outlook...
Saturday...Northwest wind 20 to 30 knots in the morning,
diminishing to 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon, then becoming
west to southwest late in the day. Waves on our ocean waters
should be 4 to 6 feet, and waves on Delaware Bay are expected to
be 2 to 4 feet.

Monday...A southwest to south wind is forecast to increase to
15 to 20 knots with gusts around 25 knots in the afternoon and
evening.

Windy and dry conditions are expected to develop this afternoon
through Saturday across the area. Northwesterly winds are
forecast to gust to 40-50+ mph Friday night with maximum
relative humidity values mostly in the 40s. Minimum relative
humidity will likely fall into the 20s on Saturday with winds
continuing to gust to around 20- 25 mph. We have contacted state
fire weather partners from across the area, who confirm most of
the region will be sufficiently wet and/or greened-up to avoid
any concerns. However, a Special Weather Statement may be needed
later on this morning for the Pine Barrens region of New
Jersey, where the green-up is slower.
