A fast moving wave of low pressure tracked northeastward off the Atlantic coast on February 7. The low steadily intensified as it gained latitude, and a sizeable shield of banded precipitation developed in its northwest quadrant. This resulted in a fairly short duration period of precipitation over the eastern mid-Atlantic, but with precipitation rates that were moderate to heavy at times. The storm produced a wide swath of several inches of snow, with considerable local variations in the snow totals. The variations were due to both distinct banding features as well as marginally cold temperatures especially near the coast, which caused precipitation to start as rain in some areas. The storm departed the region by the late afternoon of February 7 after producing a general 4 to 8 inches of snow, with some localized totals that were a little higher.

.SYNOPSIS...
Rapidly intensifying low pressure will race northeastward from
the Carolina coast this morning to the Canadian Maritimes by
Monday morning. High pressure will briefly build into the
Northeast on Monday. A weak system will progress through the
area on Tuesday before cold high pressure returns on Wednesday.
A stronger system looks to affect much of the eastern U.S.
Wednesday night through Friday, with a strong and broad surface
high spreading across much of the central and southern U.S. in
its wake through next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Summary: A quick hitting winter storm will impact the area today,
with most of the precipitation confined to the daylight hours.
Meteorological Overview: Latest sfc. analysis depicts an area of
weak (but deepening) low pressure off the South Carolina coast,
while on water vapor a mid-lvl shortwave trough was evident upstream
of this feature over southern Tennessee. This low is progged to
quickly move NNEwrd during the day today, with the low intensifying
significantly as it moves underneath the right-entrance region of a
strengthening UL jet. To highlight both the rapid intensification
and quick forward speed of the low, by this time tomorrow it is
progged to have a central pressure around 975 mb, and be located in
the Canadian Maritimes. Precipitation will overspread the area from
SW-NE this morning, as ascent increases in association with the
incoming shortwave, the UL jet, and finally (and most importantly) a
region of 600-700mb FGEN associated with the axis of the 700mb wave.
Current observations: A deck of thick cirrus blankets our area, with
light winds and temperatures ranging from around 20 in the Poconos
to the low 40s in Delmarva. Of importance to ptypes, sfc. wet-
bulb temps range from the low teens in the Poconos to the mid
30s in Delmarva, with most of the area seeing Tws in the mid 20s
to low 30s. As of 2 AM, Rain has (based on ASOS obs and mPING
reports) nearly reached the MD/VA border, with snow being
observed in western Virginia and North Carolina. Some radar
returns (aloft) are approaching southern Delmarva, but these
will likely just be virga initially due to the dry low-lvls
Forecast:
Timing... In general the system's timing looks very similar to what
was advertised in previous forecasts, with precipitation entering
our area early this morning and moving out of the area between 5-
7PM. The heaviest precipitation looks to impact the area from mid-
morning to early afternoon.
Precipitation Types... Very similar to thinking to previous
packages, i.e. almost all snow NW of I-95, mostly snow but some rain
mixed in during times of lighter precip rates near I-95, and then a
messier rain/snow mix likely towards the coast.
Precipitation & Snow Amounts... Forecast QPF amounts were heavily
based towards the 00Z HREF Probability-matched mean and WPC
guidance, resulting in a forecast of 0.2-0.5 inches of water from I-
95 northwestward and 0.5-0.9 inches of water from I-95 to the coast
with the QPF gradient oriented SE. These amounts are about 25% lower
than the previous forecast, and physically this reduction primarily
stems from the consensus low position being a bit further east/less
amplified, which keeps most of the "prime" FGEN forcing confined
near the coast, with weaker (more synoptic-driven) lift NW of I-95,
along with perhaps some compensating subsidence on the cool side of
the boundary. All that being said, our fcst QPF is still about 50%
higher than most of the coarser guidance (which generally have about
0.1-0.5 inches of total liquid) as suspect these are underplaying
the heavier rates present in the FGEN band.
All the above discussion leads us to the most important forecast
element of the day... snow amounts. The reduction of QPF naturally
did contribute to a reduction of snow amounts across the board.
Generally have 3-6 inches along and near I-95, with the axis of
higher amounts tilting SEwrd a bit to account for the FGEN band's
positioning towards the Coast. Amounts are largely 2-3 inches I-78
and northward, and a sharp gradient remains present near the coast,
due to the ptype concerns there. These snowfall amounts are still a
bit above consensus... probably a nearer to the 75th percentile
outcome than the 50th. The general reasoning for leaning on the high
side is that the potential for locally heavy snowfall does exist,
particularly near or just SE of I-95 where the mesoscale lift
associated with the FGEN band will be favorably placed within the
DGZ. Heavy rates associated in this zone would result in better
ratios and accumulations despite the marginal temperature profiles.
All that being said, would not be shocked to see this being a mostly
2-4 inch event near I-95, with some total "shutout" potential in
Delmarva and along the NJ Coastal Plain if rates never get high
enough to compensate for the poor thermal setup. Up north, QPF looks
to be the main limiting factor, but typically in these events
(provided there is not a dry arctic airmass in place), the
precipitation shield extends a bit further northward than progged.
Therefore am not totally gutting amounts up there despite some
models having only about 0.1 inch of QPF.
Despite lowering amounts, have no plans to significantly modify
headlines as the heavier rates may make up for (from an impact
perspective) total snow amounts potentially being under official
warning criteria.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/...
High Pressure will build in from the west behind the rapidly
departing low tonight. This configuration will maintain a stout
pressure gradient over the area which should keep winds elevated
through the night. This setup, characterized by strong cold
advection and a lack of decoupling, typically results in guidance
MinTs being too cold, so blended in the 90th percentile of NBM to
push us towards the higher end of guidance. That being said given
the aforementioned cold advection we will still be colder than the
last few nights with lows generally in the teens and low 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The medium-range period continues to look quite active, with a
weak system affecting the CWA on Tuesday and a much stronger one
set to impact the area Wednesday night through Friday.
At the start of the period (12z Monday), quasi-zonal midlevel
flow will be in place across much of the northern U.S.,
equatorward of a broad low in much of Canada with several
smaller-scale perturbations rotating around the main vortex.
The fast flow to the south will allow several perturbations to
race eastward across the U.S. during the week. Meanwhile, an
elongated subtropical ridge will be in place in the western
Atlantic, and this will subtly shift westward during the period,
in tandem with the westward shift of the upper low in Canada. A
couple of vigorous shortwave troughs will dig into the northern
U.S. during the week, before pivoting eastward or east-
northeastward to the east of the main trough axis (in vicinity
of the Mississippi Valley). Downstream ridge amplification will
play a pivotal role in the strengthening of the late-week system
(not to mention the considerable warm/moist advection occurring
in advance of the system), and this will set the stage for a
complex winter storm affecting much of the Northeast Wednesday
night through Friday.
In the meantime, after a brief intrusion of high pressure on
Monday (and cold temperatures), a predecessor (low-amplitude)
perturbation will migrate rapidly eastward across the northern
U.S. on Monday, with at least some interaction with a weaker
southern-stream vort max. Deterministic models have trended a
little stronger with the northern-stream perturbation as it
reaches the Northeast on Tuesday, but noticeably weaker with the
southern-stream counterpart. As such, confidence is a little
higher today that the most significant winter-weather impacts
with this system will be to our north and northwest.
Nevertheless, northern portions of the area will likely be cold
enough for some snow as the strongest lift traverses our region
on Tuesday (particularly in the morning). A cold rain will
likely occur to the south, in vicinity of the I-95 corridor and
south/east. Fortunately, QPF looks fairly low given the fast
progression of the system and the weaker influence of the
southern stream. Generally have a tenth to a quarter of an inch
across the area, which would translate to 1-2 inches of snow for
about the northern third or so of the CWA (with even less near
the urban corridor). Cannot rule out advisory-level snows,
particularly north of I-78, on Tuesday if model trends become
more aggressive with the system. Timing may also be important
here, as an earlier arrival would imply greater impacts to the
morning commute. Will continue to monitor this system closely,
but at this point, it looks like a fairly low-impact system.
This system's passage is key, however, for the late-week storm
because it will allow a subsequent intrusion of cold high
pressure into much of the Northeast. Though this intrusion will
not be ideally located (or long-lasting), the origins of the
high are from high latitudes. Wednesday's temperatures will be
several degrees colder than Tuesday. Meanwhile, the next
southern-stream system will organize quickly in the southern
Plains Wednesday and Wednesday night. With broad return flow on
the western periphery of the ridge in the western Atlantic,
copious moisture will advect northward into much of the eastern
U.S. Improving large-scale lift via an intensifying anticyclonic
upper-level jet streak in the Midwest and Northeast will lead
to widespread precipitation developing from the middle
Mississippi Valley east-northeast to the northern Mid-Atlantic
by Wednesday night. Easterly flow to the south of the
aforementioned surface high will allow for warm-advection snow
to develop across the region Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. Deterministic models are quite agreeable in this
evolution, especially at this time range. Confidence is pretty
high in impactful snow during this portion of the event,
roughly near and northwest of the urban corridor. However, the
strength of the warm/moist advection will eventually lead to a
slop fest, with various precipitation types spread through the
CWA as the event unfolds. It seems quite likely that sleet
and/or freezing rain will become a player in the winter storm
for portions of the area, though questions on timing and
placement are high given the variable model output with the
track of the developing surface low as the upper-level system
approaches the region.
Nevertheless, felt it necessary to broaden mention of chances of
sleet and freezing rain across portions of the area Thursday and
Thursday night, since confidence is increasing these types will
be present. Changes to the precipitation type forecasts are
inevitable, especially given the warm look of the CMC versus the
cold look of the ECMWF, for example. My suspicion is that the
typical biases will be present here, as models are too quick to
erode the near-surface cold air and too skittish with the
poleward advance of the warm nose. It seems fair to say this
will be quite the challenging winter storm to forecast, and it
will be worthy to keep an eye on the forecasts over the next few
days for this potentially impactful system.
The system looks to depart the region Friday or Friday night,
with an intense surface high building into much of the U.S. in
its wake. However, models are hinting at weaker systems
affecting the area as early as late in the weekend, so the
evolving pattern in the eastern U.S. after the late-week system
remains rather unclear.

Today... Conditions rapidly deteriorating to IFR/LIFR in snow this
morning, likely in the 12-14Z timeframe. Conditions eventually begin
to improve around/after 21Z, but likely stay sub-VFR. Ptypes should
be all snow NW of I-95, mostly snow along I-95 but perhaps mixing
with rain during periods of lighter precipitation, and a mix of rain
and snow at KMIV and KACY. Light and variable winds this morning
will E-NE 5-10kts through the morning and then shift to the NW
around 10-15kts this afternoon. Moderate confidence in ptypes, and
timing, High confidence of IFR/LIFR conditions
Tonight... Conditions improving to VFR this evening, WNW winds
around 10kts. High confidence.
Outlook...
Monday...Mainly VFR with light northwest winds becoming variable
during the afternoon. Moderate confidence.
Monday night and Tuesday...VFR early, but restrictions possible
with a chance of rain and/or snow (with snow more likely to the
north/west of the Philly terminals) by Tuesday morning. Best
chances for precipitation are between daybreak and midday
Tuesday. Light east or southeast winds on Monday night
gradually becoming west or northwest by Tuesday afternoon. Low

Tuesday night and Wednesday...Mainly VFR, though cannot
completely rule out MVFR CIGs on Wednesday. Northwest winds 5 to

Winds will ramp up this morning on the waters, with NNW gusts
potentially approaching gale force on our southern waters early this
afternoon. As such a Gale warning remains in effect for the ocean
waters south of Little Egg Inlet through 6 PM. while an SCA remains
in effect through tonight for the remaining marine zones. Seas will
also increase to 5-6 ft this afternoon.
Winds will decrease below Gale force overnight and potentially even
below SCA by early Monday morning. However, seas are expected to
remain elevated through the period so an SCA will likely be needed
until Monday morning.
